With live-action "Star Trek", unfortunately, you are pretty much stuck watching the remastered version which sucks.

Star Trek is an important show both historically and morally.
While still recognizing human frailties and our darker side, it illustrates an idealistic reality that we strive for. The triumph of our intellect and control of our emotions for good over letting our inner bad run rampant.

Another excellent show is the anthology series "The Outer Limits". The original 1960s version is in black and white and is a decent series, but the later remake series made from 1995-2002 is excellent. It's as good as "Star Trek" albeit "Star Trek", being episodic, enables you to connect with the characters better.

A distinctive feature of "The Outer Limits" is "The Control Voice". Besides narrating the title sequence, it appears twice each episode. First, right after the first commercial break as the initial credits are being displayed, the Control Voice sets up the issue for the episode and poses a question. At the end, the Control Voice gives a coda to the episode and which is often a moral lesson or another question. There are many "twist endings" in "The Outer Limits" and these can haunt you for days.

Just to give an example, here is "Trial By Fire", definitely one of the better episodes of "The Outer Limits" being rather intense the whole episode.

The Control Voice opens with:

"Black Mirror" (particularly the Channel 4 version) - it's an anthology, so each episode is a standalone story (often, but not always a horror story) involving a different imagined technology.

I second the suggestion of "Orphan Black" - really good series. "The X-Files" was great too, but the early "monster of the week" type episodes, are much, much better than the later episodes that just focus on the tedious alien conspiracy.

"Dark Angel" was one of my favourite shows back in the day (particularly the first season), and starred Jessica Alba (before she was a Hollywood star) as a genetically engineered super-soldier, trying to help other "mutants" created by the same sinister organisation.

For something a bit different, there's "Red Dwarf" - a very silly but funny comedy set in space.

And obviously there's the "Battlestar Galactica" remake.
If anyone says "The Expanse", don't listen to them - it's overhyped shite.

the best sci-fi show ever, in my opinion. but was canned in it's first season and after much demand to bring the show back, they had one final episode in the form of a movie "Serenity". The show won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2003 for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series.

It's on Hulu.
