+1 yJanet Jackson. Michael Jackson's younger sister, was popular in the 1990s and 2000s. She had sold over 100 million records. From Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janet_Jackson
"In 2008, Billboard placed her number seven on its list of the Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists, and in 2010 ranked her fifth among the "Top 50 R&B/Hip-Hop Artists of the Past 25 Years". In December 2016, the magazine named her the second most successful dance club artist after Madonna."
She's probably best known for her infamous nipple exposure incident at the 2004 Super Bowl, when singing partner Justin Timberlake tore off her clothes at the the end of their song and exposed her breast:

@jessiebellll It would have helped if you had asked "Do you think Janet Jackson was popular?" or "Did you like Janet Jackson?" To me, she was okay, but I prefer other types of music.

So she wanted to make another album the way she wanted, so she interviewed some producers, and met Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who had been in Prince's protégé band The Time, and who had already produced songs for Diana Ross and the SOS Band.
The resulting album was called Control, was very dance-oriented, and it was a smash hit in 1986-87, with 5 Top 10 hits and going multi-platinum. That's what put her on the map. Her followup Rhythm Nation came out a few years later and did about as well. Her output slowed but she continued to release albums every 3-5 years into the early 2000s, albums that were heavy on ballads and slow jams, and while not massive, they were still quite popular.
The Super Bowl Incident totally derailed her career - very unfairly in my opinion - especially since Justin Timberlake's career was unaffected - but I'm sure she could sell out 10-20,000 seat venues even today.12 Reply- +1 y
The "Control" album was on the leading edge of the New Jack Swing style, and it's biggest hits Nasty Girls, What Have You Done For Me Lately, and Control have all aged poorly as a result, but my favorite song was always When I Think Of You - it wasn't as big as the other three at the time, but it's aged so much better. The Pleasure Principle was also a hit, and is also more listenable today.

When I think of you was her biggest hit at the time, it was her first to reach number one.
Her whole discography has aged poorly, she barely has listeners on Spotify compared to other artists of that time
+1 yYes, back in 1986, with her album Control and them in 1989, with her album Rhythm Nation 1814 both of which were produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. After than in my opinion her music ceased to be any good. Then she got weird with her weight loss journey. In 2016, on the heels of a new tour she decided to cancel her tour so ahe could concentrate on breeding. In my opinion, was rather shitty because all those people lost their jobs.

She did receive some attention for "flashing" her boob on tv.
What the heck did she do to her nose? It looks so weird now.

00 Reply2.3K opinions shared on Entertainment & Arts topic. I can remember seeing her videos on MTV but I wouldn't say she was ever top 10 most popular artist at any given time. She probably could've been top 20 or 30 though. I don't mean of all time, I mean during the peak of her popularity.
