What is your favorite cult movie?

I have a trilogy of them
1) Duel with Dennis Weaver- Directed by a newcomer named Steven Spielberg
2) Vanishing Point starring Barry Newman
3) Two Lane Blacktop with James Taylor, Dennis Wilson (Beach Boys) and Warren Oates.
They are all car movies.

Tough one. If you're talking about Midnight movies... Not sure.
My fave blockbuster is "Aliens" with the space Marines... The dialogue is great... Annnddddd... it so reminds me of...

"The Thing (from another world)" from the 1950s, by Howard Hawks. Great overlapping dialogue, intrigue, practically no-name cast, but everyone does great jobs.

"Red River" and "The Searchers." I am no John Wayne fan in general because he couldn't act. But these are his best films. He was well directed by Ford and wasn't allowed to be his regular hammy, non-acting presence. I. E. being John Wayne on camera.

Should've won an Oscar for "The Searchers," because he is an angry, hate-filled bastard whose aim is to shoot his niece in the head after she's been the "squaw" of a bloodthirsty Indian chief, because she's been "ruined" by being his captive/woman. So many racial tensions. Wayne's character acts like a terrorist against Native Americans. Quite shocking, especially in light of the fact that the Indians were defending themselves and their lands from usurpers..

In "Red River" Wayne's character goes on the warpath against his adopted son who defies him as a bull-headed, cattle-trail boss. WAYNE draws on that same well he uses later in "Searchers" : Dark charters you never see Wayne play where he actually works on camera.

Plus Monty Clift is brilliant as the smiling, easygoing, Destry-type (in the Gary Cooper/Jimmy Stewart mold) who wins men's respect without being a tyrant.

These aren't "Rocky Horror Picture Show"-type cult films, but many people aren't aware of the original "The Thing," (they know the Kurt Russell '80s gory version) or realize that "Aliens" is cut from the same cloth, or how truly disturbing the racism in "The Searchers" is.

All of these films have superb supporting casts of actors you've seen in old and recent films, but couldn't name, despite prodigious ensemble talents. The "CULT" part is how much I love these films and try to get everyone to love them too! I love Westerns and Sci-Fi, and "Aliens" is a western, sci fi! Best of all worlds...

And, in fact, "Aliens" had created a sanitized version of the Western where the bad guy is someTHING instead of the un-PC someONE! No one can be offended if you want to kill and wipe out a humanity annihilating creature with acid for blood! Same goes for "The Thing." You gotta save the human race, despite all it's nasty flaws!!

The reason you have not heard of any of these is what makes them cult movies. Duel was only shown on television biut it was so popular it ended up in theaters. It put Spielberg on the map.

Dawn of the Dead started all these zombie movies and TV shows. I also like Red Dawn.

Well actually , the first was 1968 Night of the Living Dead with a budget of $114,000 and made $30 million , of course most of that money was from years later.

For one , Dawn, had more money to play with. Also better actors. I don't think Romero could get investors. He took a huge risk. His main star was black and in 1968 that was radical. All the unrest , the killing of MLK JR. Again , He made his money later. Dawn's budget was $26 million and that was only 10 years between movies.

Romero was the father of Zombie movies , Like George Lucas was the father of Sci fi Space movies. They thought Star Wars would bomb and would be only movie they made. It took off like a rocket (no pun) and then 100's of space movies.

To each its own, I liked both , but I liked Night better. If he made it today black dude lives and is a hero , then 1968, he had to kill him off. That is only thing I didn't like is the ending. I like return of the living dead too. It is funny. "Send more EMT's " "Brains ". That was supposed to take place in Louisville , KY , my backyard. I used to try to watch it every Halloween. Now I can't find it.

I love Donnie Darko. That would definitely be one of them. There are so many things to try to catch in that movie.
