Films featuring a lot of inner monologues?

Do you all know any films that feature a lot of inner monologues? Even though they're generally considered bad filmmaking, I'm mesmerized by such films.

I watched the new Dune film, for example, and I think I liked David Lynch's version better and partially for all the inner monologues. It gives me a sense of intimacy with the characters to hear their thoughts out loud. It's like I'm getting to actually read a person's mind.

The only two films I'm aware of that feature heavy use of inner monologues are Sin City and Dune (1984).

I especially like the more soulful and reflective types of inner monologues. There's a dream-like quality to it for me. I think it would be especially interesting as well if there was a film where we could hear just as much of the inner thoughts of the antags and not just mostly the protags, and see how their inner thoughts clash without requiring conversations.

This might be my favourite opening monologue/narration, and closing narration. Very powerful movie, true art.

I like that opening monologue very much as well. It's not my favorite film. I think one that we both love IIRC that sorta counts is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I can't remember if there were lots of cases where we heard Joel's inner thoughts voiced out loud but most of the film is basically delving deep into his mind and getting to know who is and how he thinks that way.

I'll be thinking about this q for a while. Perhaps more will occur to me in bed when I'm trying to knock out the other thoughts. Right now I'm knee deep in my 46 pages of quotes, on a range of subjects, that I'm trying to organize. My head is otherwise engaged but I wanted to answer this.

I forgot about that one! I remember the combination of visuals and music and monologues and flashbacks really did have that sort of dream-like quality that tends to resonate deeply with me. I should watch that again. It's been many years.

Cosmopolis is also somewhat like this to me although it doesn't actually feature any inner monologues. Yet the characters speak more across each other than with each other in bizarre ways that start to sound like inner monologues even though they aren't. I keep having strange thoughts about that one.

The Constant Gardener is another one I just remembered. I can't remember if it featured many inner monologues but if they were few in number, they were extremely "soulful" and introspective.

Cosmopolis is absolutely bizarre. I've heard the dialogue in that one described as sounding like robots trying to imitate being human, and I think that's a very apt description. I have to level up a bit before I can post a clip but it's a very unusual film.

Oh I see why I didn't watch these now. Not a fan of Ralph Fiennes or Robert Pattison. I think I tried watching Cosmopolis but turned it off. It might have been the one that was incredibly graphic violent too?

It's been ages since I last watched Fight Club although I really liked that one a lot. I should watch it again. I've never seen 25th Hour but after checking out the clip, I think I should definitely add that to my playlist. Synecdoche looks great to me and maybe most up my alley. I haven't seen it either but I like many of Charlie Kaufman's other films he wrote like Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine.

I wonder if there are any horror films that have lots of inner monologues. I find at least the general idea fascinating, like perhaps a psychological horror where we're constantly inside the character's head down to their paranoias.

I thought of another— Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) Most of it is quick observations but there are parts that have good inner monologue.

25th Hour is so good. One of the best written endings, a monologue by the father of the main character. It has stuck with me. Hope you get to see it.

I’m a big fan of Kaufman and Eternal Sunshine. Synecdoche is a lot harder to watch/experience. It leaves me feeling smaller and more insignificant than I’ve ever felt. But the script is incredible.

I’m not huge on horror films so I couldn’t say for sure.

That Sherlock Holmes film looks so odd to me, but perhaps I should check it out. One that just popped into my mind that I forgot about (I think mentioning Fight Club sort of helped me to remember) is American Psycho. That had many inner monologues. I love the business card scene.

Yes!! Now that you mention it, the author of American Pyscho has a few other scripts/stories that have been made into movies and have some crazy inner dialogue. The Rules of Attraction, I think is the one coming to mind.
