For example, on The Big Bang Theory: It's a show about nerds. Sheldon, Howard, Leonard, and Raj are all nerdy guys that are friends with each other. But being nerds, they all have varying degrees of social awkwardness. And Sheldon is arguably the most awkward one among them. But when he doesn't understand something, or is oblivious to something, or it goes over his head... people explain it to him.
That doesn't happen in real life. In real life, when nerds don't understand something, we're left high and dry. Why doesn't anyone ever explain anything to me? Lol

Is anyone else annoyed at how television and movies often portray unrealistic scenarios?
Sheldon's character was often oblivious to things that he didn't value and although he does grow it's only because of Amy and Penny. He likely would have been reluctant to accept an explanation while those around him were not going to put themselves in a position that would only result in more condescending comments than they were constantly subjected to. My problem with the depiction of the nerds wasn't with the awkwardness it was how effeminate they were. Penny was the manliest character for the longest time. I remember wishing they would just tone it down a little which I was relieved they slowly did but mostly because of the character development surrounding the female characters who aren't nearly as girly as the guys at any point in the series, but I digress. In reality people are generally self involved and caught up in the day to day that they are generally oblivious and since they know that you're smart so unless you just come out and ask they'll like assume that you know. Starting an explanation based on an assumption alone is similar to the concept of mansplaining. I wouldn't have launched this explanation if you didn't ask. Haha

I just think that some social circles are different than others. I have a friend that reminds me of Sheldon. His friends are also similar to Sheldon’s crew. When I’ve seen episodes, it seems very realistic to me in the way that those friends are— highly intelligent and seemingly awkward. I do agree that some tv shows are not always realistic in the way that they portray characters but that could just be because they do something that I wouldn’t do or say. On some level, the audience watches because the characters are relatable to their own experiences.
Then when we do understand we get mansplained to, as well. Your right though, often when you actually want something people won't explain it but when you don't they do.
Maybe that is the trick, pretend you know it so when you don't so others will still explain it.
I'm the same way though, I find I over explain things to people who understand it. I don't explain when I think they SHOULD understand it and they look confused... lol.
I worry more about those that think they know what they are doing (especially at work) cause it means long day for me to clean up their mess if they really don't know what they are doing.
Some of my software devs have brains the size of a small planet and are equally as paranoid about various stuff.
For us mere mortals we do often have to explain basic things to them at times, especially in social surroundings, with guys being more often the most naive.
we do however explain shit to them, as we don’t want to keep babysitting them or seeing them get hurt emotionally or physically.
That and it’s often a good to wind them up with stuff 😂 cruel I know lol

Yes it ruins the whole film for me. Last night I watch one called slapface and he just met this girl and she’s basically moved in, cooking, all up in the guys family business, it was just so unrealistic it ruined the whole film even tho it wasn’t centered around their relationship.
The Big Bang is only successful as a meaningless piece of entertainment because it contains acceptance of typically nerdy culture topics that are included in popular culture. If you notice he does it in a stereotypically accumulative way, the nerd is the one who buys junk from a TV series or similar. However it only stops at the stereotype.
It is very rare that TV tends to break stereotypes, series that do so are for example Atypical or The End of the F *** ing World, generally TV tends to exploit stereotypes to sell often doing it in a very heavy way.

Tv is often a fantasy. Its usually our hopes/dreams/daydreams/thoughts put into live action. I respect it a bit more when its relatable experiences of pleasure and pain being showed

But in my experience , people do explain the obvious things it's just that they should get more familiarity with you only then shall they explain.
BC mostly it's the nerds that they do explaining Lol people love to appropriate others they love to explain social queues especially to nerds they feel they become smarter than nerds by doing it.
Oh yeah, I have hard time with it. I hear the whole its just a movie thing so you have to get past the technicalities and embrace the entertainment value.
But it hard for me when the whole thing is based upon the overly dramatized out come of totally unrealistic event. This probably why I like fantasy and fiction because its supposed to be make believe.

I am a little bit too. Another example that comes to mind is how some professions are glorified on tv shows and in movies (like doctors, lawyers, etc.). They make you believe they're glamorous professions but there are also downsides to them. Every profession has pros and cons and tv doesn't necessarily accurately portray them.

You have to realize that they are "explaining it to HIM" so that the script moves the plot forward. This is most noticeable in law and order procedural dramas, where things have to be explained to the viewers, yet done so through the characters in the show. Not always an easy thing to do. Good writers make or break a show.

In sheldon's case, he's an exaggerated version of someone in the austistic spectrum, hence why he's painfully oblivious of a lot of social cues. That coupled with his heightened sense of nsrcissim makes him like that

If TV shows were about real life, would you want to watch them? Even reality shows are somewhat scripted and then they are edited to draw out the maximum effect. I can't watch a TV show about my profession, but I will scream at the TV the entire time.

Jaime I'm a fan of that show. But I've wondered about the realism of someone as intelligent as Sheldon Cooper not grasping subtle social/emotional interactions. I understand that there probably is something called emotional intelligence that Sheldon lacks, but it still seems unrealistic to me that his character would so thoroughly and caustically berate the field of engineering (Howard's field). Sheldon, as a techie, would more realistically embrace engineering.
In reality, nerds don't ever get to sleep with Penny. Instead, Penny continues to date the bad boys and the nerds are lucky to get the Leslie Winkles in their lives. Lol.
@MrOracle That’s not true! I’m at least AS attractive as the actress playing “Penny”, and my ex Lee is an complete nerd! Although he was a foot taller than me, @115-120lbs he weighed only about 20-25lbs more than I. So he was very skinny, I was his his first “girlfriend” so he wasn’t exactly Mr. Suave, and he’s studying physics and engineering to become an architectural engineer! So skinny ✔️, definitely a computer nerd✔️, socially awkward (in the beginning)✔️, and he’s now studying physics✔️✔️✔️! That’s a nerd of the first order, yet we dated for over a year and only broke-up because 6yrs of being in a long-distance, basically part-time relationship was not fair to either of us, especially him! So I seriously don’t want to hear this “attractive woman only want bad boys” bullshit anymore! I’m absolutely certain that you don’t like it when fanatical women's activists start spouting bullshit about how “ALL MEN” are the same, so why would you do that to women! Look, I’m sure that there are some women like that, but we are not all the same, in fact very few of us are like that. Of ALL my closest friends, only one dates an asshole, because “he’s just so cute”! The other 9 in the group all dated completely different types of guys. My first boyfriend was an athlete, my second was a total nerd. What most women want is a confident, funny guy who treats us well. Of course women aren't all the same, but we both know there are plenty like I describe. Chances are you're going to have much more successful and much happier relationships, because you have your priorities straight. Too many people - men and women alike - do not.
@MrOracle That’s a shame that people do not have their priorities straight, although I will say, I have never yet met anyone or even know of anyone who acts like that, and especially given the drama of relationships in the microcosm of High School, one would think that we would have at least heard of some girls like that, but I seriously have never heard of any? What exactly is your point, I mean why is this suddenly about ME? I thought that it would be unfair for me to expect him to be celibate for 6 years at LEAST! So I suggested that we could stay as a couple, but that if HE met anyone in California, that he should “go for it” and enjoy himself. I got the idea from Goldie Hawn when she a Kurt Russell we’re apart because of work, Kurt was allowed to sleep with anyone else he wanted! But Lee took this to mean that I wanted to screw around (which I did not, and could not have been further from reality) and Lee decided that it would be better to just end it! The one that gets to me is anything they show about compiters, or computer applications or people working on a computer. For instance, why do all those people working in a computer lab have to type at 2500 clicks a minute for 2 minutes for every job that they perform? How come whatever question you ask them, they dont even have to switch between applications or whatever they have on screen? They just start typing without having to even think what they will type.
My friends or family will explain to me stuff I don't understand, as some social aspects generally confuse me and it stresses me out. But it depends on the person as to whether they exain stuff
First and foremost it's a situational comedy and is meant to entertain. It isn't a documentary.
Also they made fun of Sheldon as much as they helped explain things that went over his head. Sometimes they were sarcastic in response when he had a moment when he didn't understand something as well.

Also people don't necessarily owe anyone else an explanation if you don't understand something which can feel upsetting if you think you need help understanding a situation.
Can you give a specific example of something that you need help understanding and explain how nobody is willing to further explain things to you?

Well, a lot of it is for entertainment purposes. Perhaps realism doesn’t create the stories that certain directors or those in power want to tell, so they have to make up scenarios that border on realistic and unrealistic.
many times, yes. but my life is plain and boring. exaggeration in TV shows make them much more interesting and better than reality. i drown in them. i worry about the character's problems instead of mine.
If you think that’s bad, you should see some anime clips. The amount of unrealistic-ness is almost cringeworthy. Mainly in how the female characters behave.

Yeah, many cartoons I grew up watching as a kid had certain anachronisms in them, I got pretty annoyed and disappointed when I discovered that some of these things are obsolete and don't exist anymore.

TV and movies always push unrealistic scenarios. Pandemics for example so the sheep fall for it when the government tries it in real life or show nukes going off to keep you scared which never actually happen in the real world so yea they are not worried about portraying bunch of nerds right on on Big Bang Theory.

They're PHDs/researchers, not even instructors, and they all elected to work on fields that are pretty limited to academia. Any of them could have moved into commercially-applicable research and gone to work for public/private companies - but such companies expect actual results. Pay in academia is relatively low, but you also don't really have to accomplish anything, and there are high levels of benefits (relatively low amount of work hours, lots of vacation time, sick time, medical benefits, etc.).
Yes, they have to be mentally skilled and educated, but they live a relatively stress-free, easy life compared to most people, and as a result, the salary portion of their compensation is modest. You can bet that some of their classmates chose instead to maximize their incomes, and are making $300-500,000 a year or more working for a defense company, tech company, chemical company, space company, etc. The work hours are much longer and there are deadlines and expectations, but the pay is much higher to offset this.
I get real annoyed by how men act on sitcoms. Their usually always goofy and doofuses. While that goes with comedy these guys are usually acting in a way that’s more comedic to women than to men.
It's because of the double standard. Men don't get offended as easily. We can appreciate humor directed at our kind, while women can't; they take it personally.

Lol a good majority of people don't want to see realism on tv. That would be excruciatingly boring for many. Does it annoy me personally? I don't watch enough TV to have a true opinion.
Someone explaining something is way more realistic than say Bonds suit deflecting 7.62x39 without issues or submarines surfacing in plain daylight to attack a convoy while escorts are present.
Yes I’ve grown tired of scripted shows in general. I tend to watch reality shows like game shows, interviews, talk shows, journalistic shows, without a script.
