Historical Fiction/Horror Films?

Can you guys suggest any good historical fiction films with elements of horror or vice versa? I always loved that combination. Examples of what I'm talking about:

Ravenous:

Apostle:

Brimstone:

Interview With the Vampire:

Dracula: Untold (cheesy but I enjoyed it!):

There are a whole lot of others I've seen but didn't mention like Deathwatch, Overlord, Army of Darkness (maybe more horror than comedy, but I'm down for horror-comedy), Pan's Labyrinth, etc.

I'm always on the lookout for new ones, so I'm wondering if anyone has some favorites to suggest in this category that I might have yet to watch.

Also this isn't exactly what you're looking for but is is a historical action with Savagery rather than horror... depending to who you ask, lol, it is horror... historical warriors were savage... my favorite series of current.

So When I Googled Valmont I also saw Goya's Ghost, surely this is a historical horror (elements of).. Valmont was recommended to me by a Russian pal, I probably would have never otherwise found it.

Yep, with a blind man! That one is set in a post-apocalyptic future although it counts well enough for me as historical! Holds a similar sort of appeal to me. Goya's Ghost looks excellent! I have to watch. I love Goya's Black Paintings.

4) Valmont historical horribleness (take the word horrible , rather than horror lol, but in a historic sense, that is indeed horror and blasphemy of all sorts)

Nevermind priest is probably futuristic too , but it's not a new movie, lol so if you were to count that

That is a historical horror, ...2008... the other movie is called just "blood mary" is pure horror it seems, not really historical...

I've yet to watch that one but I have a strange fascination with watching documentaries of serial killers like Bundy, Dahmer, Harold Shipman, Aileen Wuornos, Pedro Lopez, etc. I think I always want to try to understand how their mind works.

My motivations might be much darker in nature. I never put it above me that I might have been a serial killer if I was born and raised the same way, believed the same things, had the same temptations, maybe even the same neurological irregularities if there are any. So I want to understand this darker nature of human beings so that I might be able to be more just, and not vengeful, against those who have that darkest side. I also want to understand as much as possible so that I don't end up being at risk of doing the same.

I just watched Valmont the other day and is the horror more for men or women? I could sympathize a bit with Valmont. Merteuil was the truly horrific villain from my male-centric perspective. Valmont was just an idiot more interested in conquering than loving. Or maybe the real horror is to be Cécile in the middle of all of this.

I kind of developed a crush on Merteuil through the film... Anette Benning. She's horrible but somehow I'm deeply attracted. :-D She's a most formidable rival.

Van Helsing (2004)

I saw that one in the theater when it came out. It wasn't exactly my favorite although some decent fun. I usually like maybe ones that are a bit less of a visual spectacle (although oddly I like Dracula: Untold for some bizarre reason).

I often wish there were more set in Europe during the Middle Ages, or one involving Vikings, or ancient Rome, or something like that! 13th Warrior is one I enjoyed a lot that I forgot to mention above.

I have to check out Erik the Viking! I've yet to see that one but looks like great fun in the trailer. I love Monty Python and the Holy Grail and I also enjoyed Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
