I feel bad for the ones who were unbelievably gifted but who were tortured souls. I'm thinking of people like Billie Holiday and Janice Joplin. Phil Lynott's early death after years of heroin addiction was also tragic. There are others that I can't recall at the moment.

I mourn the loss of Jimi Hendrix most of all, but after reading extensively about him, I don't think he overdosed on pills and booze as is claimed. He didn't use heroin, meth or other hard drugs. I understand he did like LSD. Sometimes he took sleeping pills. As for his death, it seems very likely that he was murdered.

But some people just partied too hard. I miss them but don't feel particularly sad for them.

Here's the thing, though. The music business eats musicians alive. The incredible pressure to produce new music that sells, constant traveling, management issues, etc. are too much for some people.

Most musicians begin very young. They love music and are overjoyed to gain success, popularity and a degree of wealth, but they get sucked into booze, substance abuse and sexual promiscuity, especially when they are young. Booze, drugs and groupies are part of the business.

People party because they are surrounded by others who live that lifestyle. Doing those things is a way of letting of steam.
For some, it's like a poor person who wins the lottery and spends the money foolishly on lavish lifestyles.
For some, booze, drugs and sex are a way of coping with the pressure.
Some of those people simply burn out young.
Others are fortunate enough to see the writing on the wall, find stability at some point, and survive.
And there are some who handle their careers like a business, moderate their partying, take care of themselves, manage their wealth, and survive to continue performing into their 70s and 80s.
Some get out of the business entirely because it's too crazy.

I admire gifted, hard working musicians, but I've seen the business and can understand how people can get caught up in craziness. It's tragic when it ends in overdose or health problems.

I do as much as I feel bad for common people who die from overdose. It's really sad that despite having money, fame, lot of fan loves you but you still feel lonely or don't have anyone who truly understands you or just been so traumatised due to the things that happened in their childhood or teenage years that they end up trying drugs and getting addicted to them to distract themselves from their past or present. They probably felt it helped them escape from the pain, misery, frustration and feel lighter and happy for sometime. It just shows how lonely people can be despite being surrounded by people.. Wish someone would have understood what they were going through and helped them and also make them join a rehabilitation centre.

If they're under 25, then yeah I feel bad. Somehow they could never figure out how to be a healthy adult and might have been too young or surrounded by the wrong crowd to realize they needed to ask for help. When everyone around you parties, are you all addicts or all living one day at a time?

If they're 25 and older, they had enough time to live with themselves and the consequences of their mistakes. By 25, most dont live day to day but paycheck to paycheck. This means you have the ability to plan ahead but continue to make bad decisions.

I'm so confused how this question is worded. You know it's not only artistic people do drugs right? You do understand that? You know doctors do drugs. Scientist do drugs. Mom's do drugs. Athletes do drugs. My point is it has nothing to do with the "lack of intelligence". There has been studies that have shown there is some sort of bond between intelligence and drug use. I'll try and find that link.

It is definitely sad when someone loses their life because of drugs. a lot of drugs have psychoactive properties that make people feel great and they never want to lose that feeling. Where those people mess up is moderation. Has nothing to do with intelligence. Once your not keeping moderation in mind you will lose every single time. It's hard for most people because drugs can be habit forming. Then once your hooked it's a ticking time bomb for a lot of people.

If you choose to do drugs you must always do them responsibly and respect them every single time. Because if you don't, you are on a fast path to death.

Yes of course. If they are not trying to die. It’s still a tragedy just like Dying in a car accident. It’s an accident. Nobody should think they deserve it. You walk out the door everyday and don’t know what the hell is going to unexpectedly come to be. Whether you get hit by a bus or OD on some whatever. I would say if you take enough of something to OD it probably isn’t your first time getting high, and know how much you would generally do. Everyone should try drugs. At least once. It might make people realize some things like they are just driving down a different road on their pursuit of happiness and some people crash and most don’t

Yes I do :) Just because you're talented in one area of your life doesn't mean you have your life figured out. When people have no boundaries and structure because of their money and fame it can be very difficult to live a disciplined life. And they're surrounded by people who want to take advantage of them and make money off them and control them. You can see so many athletes who could be great but they make terrible decisions and don't understand how they're sabotaging their own career and that's just sport related things then you have all the personal life bad decisions as well. With music it's the same you see bands fighting and breaking up and fighting over money and artists getting exploited by labels and treated badly etc. There's so much to deal with. And some people are just a lot more prone to addiction than others.

I am not against drug use so I don't think of it's something that needs sympathy. More good for them they lived the way they wanted before they went out if anything I respect it.
Of course if they didn't want to live that way and they used drugs as coping thing rather than just what they wanted that I can sympathise for. When there trying to get off it and etc. If it's just one what likes to do it in their free time then go for it.

Also it's got nothing to do with the lack of intelligence many people make such claims but that just shows they don't understand humans at all. A good example is Einstein smoked and drank his whole life even when doctors told him to stop he wouldn't, and trust me he knew they weren't good for his health.

The thing is, even if that is true for that person, there are other risks. Tens of thousands of Americans alone die each year because Mexican cartels are spiking other drugs with Fentanyl, which is a super powerful opiate, like heroin that is 20 times more concentrated. People are taking pills that are supposed to be Oxy or Xtacy, or cocaine or heroin that has had had Fentanyl added, and they OD and die.

It certainly didn't help that doctors were prescribing opiates by the dump truck full because they were getting kick backs, and then when their addicted patients were cut off, they went to the streets to get their fix, and so many have ODed.

It's very sad, but, yes, many willingly participated in their own deaths.

Yeah well I have driven an ambulance and I'm sorry to say you are poorly informed on what's actually going on. The majority of them know better and are not trying to kill themselves. They may have become physically dependent on these drugs and just as you would become I'll and desperate if deprived of food they become the same way when deprived of the drug. The sad part is some became addicted to heroin by simply following doctors orders when being prescribed opiates. Sure some became addicted to heroin from illegal experimentation but it's all the same to the body and once that physical dependence is there it would be like you trying not to eat for a month while being surrounded by your favorite treats and meals.

Then you have the people coming out of it swinging because you ruined their high.
Or the person I know that has been addicted most of his life Living on welfare.. Stole from his neighbors because he can’t hold a job. Just killed his girlfriend in an auto accident. Leaving her children motherless.

So 100 percent correct. It is a disease that is misunderstood and stigmatized. The same person that looks down on an addict on there way to pick up their prescription for oxycontin may not realize that they are on the same trajectory but some how justify thier use of drugs because it's legal. I know this because I was a medic in the Air Force. I also had addicts in my family that I looked down upon and actually joined the service to get away from them and that lifestyle. I always new I was better and stronger than them. While I was in the service I was prescribed oxycodone after a surgery due to an injury lifting a patient. Never drank or smoked. The medication helped me function in my role as a medic in the Air Force. They worked fine until they didn't so the dose was increased. Long story short It led me down that path where I said I would never be. A 10 year struggle with opiate addiction the withdrawals where horrific and life threatening at one point. I lied I Dr shopped off base. Fortunately it's behind me know and even though I had excellent care it was the most difficult thing I've been through.
