When you play video games what difficulty most often do you play on?

Normal mode

It depends on how fun the game is... If it is a good game then whatever the hardest setting is. If it's not that interesting, I don't tend to want to amp the challenge level. My interest level determines my effort. For example, I enjoyed For the King when it came out. The first day I bought it, I stayed up all night playing it. It was just fun. This is the message you get when you start the game. People would cry on the steam boards that it was too hard on the easiest setting. Months later they added custom settings to nerf the game to make it easier for the people that suck at video games. People that were good at the game share their strategies. Even after they made it easier, five years later only 1% of players have beat the game on master, and I did that in the first couple of days it was out. Make a good game and I'll play it on hard, make a so so game and I probably will give it a chance on normal or whatever the default is before losing interest. Making a bad game harder by doing something like reducing amount of damage or whatever, doesn't make it a better game.

I choose normal for the first time through a game, but if I like it enough to replay it then I will sometimes increase the difficulty depending on the game. Like Streets of Rage and Golden Axe, I play those types on harder difficulties, and State of Decay 2 I regularly play on Nightmare mode (I can play Lethal, but it becomes more work than fun), but other games that just increase the HP of enemies and weaken the damage my weapons do I usually don't play on harder difficulties.

I prefer harder difficulties if they make the AI more intelligent and it requires better strategy from me. If all the difficulty does is make the enemies into damage sponges, that just makes the game boring and artificially time consuming.

I usually choose (or have chosen) normal difficulty mode, but in the last years i chose easy mode in many fast action games, as i get stuck in certain situations. I can't react fast enough anymore and to avoid frustration i switch to a more easy mode.

Sports games : highest difficulty... Anything else I play on normal because I like to enjoy the story and explore the game
