Why did SNL become so unfunny? It use to be the funniest show on television now its just political messaging. What do you think?

It became awful because political commentators in general don't have insightful points anymore. I think that partially happened because the public is so uninformed that they can't interact with commentary on any meaningful level. Commentary has just become a contest to see whoever can bludgeon the otherside over the head hardest for partisan talking points. It's not funny. It's not thought provoking. It's not even ideologically consistent. Political commentary needs to be deeper than "have you SEEN the guy's hair?"

The only way political commentary can be deeper than that is if people have enough knowledge to say "okay, we don't like this guy's hair, but what are the problems with his policies?" And unfortunately, America has become too uninformed to do that.

I know that it became obvious to me that SNL was more interested in pushing partisan politics than entertaining people back in 2010, with the decline of Colbert and Jon Stewart and the soon-coming passage of the gay marriage bill. The left had started attacking people over every little thing, regardless of whether the policies actually did anything they genuinely disagreed with. The logic was "this person bad, disagree with this person at all costs." Unfortunately, left wing ideas dominated the late night tv space. So SNL had to appeal to their market base.

SNL was once one of the best comedy & music shows on TV. Things went downhill quickly in the early 80s before turning into crap. Tried to watch once or twice after Eddie Murphy era and it just wasn't funny. When Monday morning news headlines try (and fail) to push the "funniest skits" from previous weekend, the show has long since jumped the shark. Much like CNN, MSNBC and other political opinion outlets, SNL appeals to relatively few. Worst/funniest of all is that most I know don't even care why the network hasn't pulled the plug on it.

So... 2016. 2016 is when Saturday Night Live became unfunny woke garbage. Although to be fair, it's really more like 2013. That's when they had their great exodus of 2000s talent, like Andy Samberg and Kristen Wiig.

I stopped watching it back in the mid `80's because it stopped being funny and original (it was all reduced to variations on the same 6 or 8 script characters every week!) and was QUITE boring! First off, they lost the only two funny people they ever had, Chevy and John, then it just stagnated!! It was like playing Peek-A-Boo with a baby in reverse: the baby (audience) never gets tired of it but you (the performer) do!

Besides, Monty Python was leaps and bounds funnier than SNL EVER was!! SNL was a pale copy of Monty Python!!

By the time I stopped watching iit, EVERY WEEK you got The Coneheads, the killer bees, the foreign guys selling Pepsi & hamburgers, samurai this or that, the two grade school kids, if Steve Martin was on, you got Wild & Crazy Guys, it was so predictable you could practically set your clock by it!!

The clip you posted was first aired in 1997, so presumably this is an example of the good ol' days.

Having watched some cliups from SNL from the last year or 2, I can't see any difference, both are showing topical, controversial jokes of the issues of the day.

A lot of people in the comments seem to agree with you though so I can only conclude that the problem is you.

SNL has not been funny in years. During the Trump era all their skits were Trump bad laugh at him. Even before that they were not that funny - now it is mostly woke , left garbage that mocks much of the country and tries to pass itself off as morally superior to anyone that is not in line with woke , leftist bullshit.
