What is the reason the general audience disliked the star wars prequel trilogy?

I understand why OT fans might not like it from the way they envision Darth Vader or how it was not like the original trilogy

but how come regular people didn't like it? was it because they didn't know what to expect of anakin and they didn't know how to view these characters and they didn't understand the story being told or understand the point of a Tragic Hero structure?

do the general audeicne just expect anakin to be evil, and not a good guy hero who turns evil?

Jarjar was dumb and super annoying, they didn't like the portrayal of anakin imagine only seeing bad ass Vader as a kid in the 80s then the prequels come and you see that same guy whining about sand and he looks like a pretty boy, people didn't like that, and the first prequel ep1 was pretty long and boring they just talked about space politics and there was only one cool lightsaber fight, episode 2 was better and had more interesting stuff going on but still wasn't good to people who grew up on OT, ep 3 is when it all came together and it was a great movie but people had already turned on the trilogy by that point so it wasn't gonna change their minds about the issues they had with it,

Then in 2008 the star wars the clone wars animated show released and this is what change people's minds about the prequels, the clone wars fleshed out the prequels so much and filled in all the blanks, as well as fleshing out anakin Obi-Wan doku Palpatine, and most of all the clones, who kinda came outta no where in the pt, everything was built apon, and even added new characters like ahsoka tano, asaj ventress, hando, savaj opress, just to name a few, and it expanding the story of darth maul, im jumping around a lot because words can't explain how much this show did for the prequel trilogy, it was fantastic, star wars the clone wars single handedly made the prequel era/ clone wars Era the most interesting, expansive, action packed, and loved Era of star wars

Note this is just my opinion based on my knowledge of the fanbase and what I've heard in countless reviews and critiques.

Me personally I was born in 2000 so I grew up watching the ot, pt, and clone wars at the same time so I never had any hate for the prequels I loved them, to this day revenge of the sith is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. But I understand how people from the 80s could have hated it at the time. I hate star wars ever since Disney got a hold of it, I feel like they're ruining the lore just for cash grabs, all the heart left with George Lucas. I will forever be a star wars fan just everything pre Disney sale

the prequels + clone wars show exactly what the original trilogy had envisioned. Anakin Skywalker was a good pilot, cunning warrior, and a good friend. o make anakin innocent, you had to start with anakin as a child.

My feeling is that the whole series is fairly "meh" but I especially disliked the prequel trilogy movies because they don't really track logically with the rest of the franchise. Mind you, this is my analysis as I've reviewed the movies like 2 decades on from their release; I enjoyed them when they came out.

The prequels are supposed to tell the story of Anakin becoming Vader, but that story arc isn't very apparent. It feels like Anakin's journey happens as an aside to whatever other chaos is happening on screen at the time, instead of the primary focus of the movies. Which is unfortunate... because if you want to tell the story of someone becoming corrupted, explaining in detail how exactly that happens is really important.

I first watched this trilogy when I was young, and there are a few things that led me to dislike it. First, I hated watching Anakin go from this super cute little boy who is saved from slavery, to a fascist mass murdering lunatic. That really broke my heart. Keep in mind that I had not seen the original trilogy.
I know that people always say this, but I hated Jar Jar Binks. He felt like a real annoyance in the first movie for me.
The acting seemed very bland to me, and I felt like the musical score was not varied enough throughout the trilogy.
The slide transitions between scenes felt unnecessary and annoying at first, but by the end, it felt like an iconic part of the experience. But for a while, I did not enjoy this effect.
I hated that Darth Maul died so easily, and in the first movie.
I did not understand what Qui-Gon Jinn had to do with the clone army. At least not by simply watching the movie. I had to go online and read about it to completely understand what he did.

That was everything I can remember.

You dont have much real criticisms of these movies. Anakin was a Good kid and a legendary jedi knight. He tragically falls to the dark side. This doesn't make the movie bad. Just sad.

I'm just telling you why I didn't like the movies when I was 12, I'm not trying to write an analysis of the films. If anything, I am more interested in what my 12-year-old self was thinking.
But those were the reasons why I didn't like those movies.

Like, I knew that horrible things happen, and some people become monsters, but I didn't watch movies to experience that, I watched movies to feel whatever Ghost Busters made me feel. My 12-year-old self hated a bunch of movies that I love now.

You're right that the acting was bland. The jedi speaking blandly makes sense because they were supposed to detach or control there emotions and they kinda just denied them in a sociopathic way. The Chosen One was very emotional. This is what I like about him. But he let his emotion get the best of him and his attachment and the JEdi Order made him more "robotic" and hten he actually came robotic someday

The Clone Wars was great however.

If you just focus on Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith, then you may view the prequel era in a different light.

Attack of the Clones I view as a sort of fun prologue for the actual good stuff.

I really wish The Phantom Menace was better. I like Anakin as a child to show anakin at his most innocent. A cute little kid friendly store with Anakin is a great way to start his story. I wish there was more stories with him as a kid. He can be a really cool character as a kid.

I completely agree with everything that you said. Nowadays, I try my best to enjoy those movies without comparing them to the original trilogy, but I LOVE the original trilogy. When I finished Empire Strikes Back, I just couldn't help but compare the prequels. It took me a while to get over it.

But yes, I still enjoy Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith. I don't really go back to those movies when I get a hankering for some good ole Lucas creations, though.
I generally end up playing through KOTOR 1 and 2.

I found them to be poorly written, poorly directed, overly reliant on special effects, and Anakin’s story-arc was very poorly conceived. However, the special effects themselves were good and most of the acting was sound.

And, in fairness, they did get progressively better.

It was supposed to be the story of Anakin Skywalker, one of the greatest, most enigmatic characters in the Star Wars universe.

Hayden Christensen lacked emotion, body language and any sign of life.

Natalie Portman is totally bland with no emotional range whatsoever. She walked around the entire movie with this blank look on her face like she was going to walk into a wall.

And Jar Jar Binks needs to be put through a meat grinder.

Lucas should have had Leo DiCaprio as Anakin and Kiera Knightley as Padme.

Watching Kiera, DiCaprio, and Ewan McGregor doing those scenes together would have been breathtaking.

Cinema changed from prop design and puppets to CGI, with the added problem of story and writing, I think it makes it ever harder for actors to immerse themselves in their roles, personally I think that George made the phantom menace and the other sequels in a real it's ok so I'll work with that, instead of being pedantic. The original characters of Luke, Han and Leia, they just were so much more believable. It's hard to put your finger on, because I watched all starwars films, and my favorites of late are the Mandalorian series, and rogue one. I also really like the book related canon. Disney doesn't have the rights to use these stories, so I think most of what they will produce in the future will sick.

The two worst movies I've ever paid to watch are:

The Phantom Menace

Half the script is Anakin or Jar Jar shouting "Oops" and accidentally destroying the enemy. Phantom Menace is a bad comedy, while the Original Trilogy was dead serious.

Deadpool (Try making me laugh without an f-bomb every sentence. It's not entertainment to me)

My only real criticism of the prequels is that they cut too many scenes. The politics stuff was integral to the story and I wanted more.

but as for why people hated them? Critics shat on them and people followed. The initial trailers and theatre viewings had people fucking stoked
