    The short answer: money

The long answer: episodes 7-9 were an attempt to further add on to the canon of the star wars universe after the copyright was bought by disney in their purchase of Lucasfilms. They knew the fans of star wars spread over generations with people who loved their material and extended universe but there were also many fans who only saw the movies themselves and never ventured into that extra material so they wanted to make something for a new generation with new expectations and new hopes for what Star Wars can come to mean for a new generation. Unsurprisingly, the Star Wars fandom is insanely toxic and not only responded poorly to a black storm trooper but also a female jedi (as if there haven’t been tons already in the extended universe). They took to attacking many of the actors online, causing many to go offline, and critique the latest films for being purposely “woke” and ignoring the source material when the reality is it was not made for the same group of people as it was in the 70’s, not that they cared or bothered to think about that. They say this as if giving Darth Vader, AKA Anakin Skywalker, a soul and an empathetic story of trying to save the woman he loved from an otherwise horrible fate wasn’t highly critiqued upon the release of episodes 3-6. In the end, Disney made their money and their movies and now they’re part of the franchise forever in spite of the critiques of the very loud group of people that didn’t like what they saw.

Well one, they started on episode 4, so that should be a clue.

This is all in an Esquire article from the 1970s, but from the beginning Lucas said there were going to be 9 episodes total. Then after the second 3 everyone (not Lucas) started saying that was all they had ever planned.

Then suddenly the third 3 came around, and they said they had always planned on having 9.

    Now they're doing more.

Because there were more stories to tell. The Thrawn trilogy (which was called episodes VII, VIII, and IX when I was a kid) is fantastic, and it's not alone in that. Do you really think the reforging of an interstellar alliance after a brutal decaying of its predecessor and a bitter war, accompanied by the recreation of an order of genetically-selected wizard monks has no potential to be interesting? There's more to it than Luke and Vader, you know.

Unfortunately, Disney wasn't motivated by art, or by storytelling, or even by fame, but by money, and thought that the name "Star Wars" would be enough to sell tickets. And it was- at first. But the movies sucked (well, the first two; I gave up after that), and they thought that didn't matter, since it still had the name.

The simple answer is money. I think another part though is that Kathleen Kennedy was looking for a platform for feminist messaging.
