Although he was way before my time I do love oldies but for what ever reason I have never been into Elvis much at all. Not sure why.

I'm told that his religious sentiments kept him from being comfortable with that title; social ones may also have said Fats Domino was a better contender for the title, but that wouldn't've been acceptable to mainstream American society at the time.

He was more of a king of rhythm and blues, really. I think he single-handedly brought sex appeal to music in the US though. Thereby creating the oversexed groupie. He died on August 16, 1977, so not quite 45 years yet as I write this.

Anyway, in the United States he is the third best selling artist in certified numbers. #1 is the Beatles, so a group not an individual. #2 is Garth Brooks, so Country not Rock. By that measure he is the King of Rock and Roll.
