Anything in particular you're looking for? The Man Who Was Thursday is one of those books that (I maintain) everyone SHOULD read, but few do; it's not long, but it's a book that takes place on many layers, so reading it just once won't get you anywhere NEAR everything it has to offer. It's also old enough to be in the public domain (https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/1695/pg1695.txt ), so you can read it for free.
If you want something from THIS century... well, of late I've been reading Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight archive, which I've quite enjoyed. The man puts EFFORT into his worldbuilding, and my goodness does it show. He's the guy that Robert Jordan chose to finish his Wheel of Time series, and while I haven't read those books, I can easily see why someone would choose him to finish their life's work; he clearly takes what he does seriously (hint, hint, Patrick Rothfuss!).

YES! The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. There's actually three books in the trilogy: The Pillars of the Earth, World Without End, A Column of Fire. There's also a prequel titled The Evening and the Morning.
I'm not going to make a mean-spirited joke about recommending you some thick books, like War and Peace, so you can get more elevation when standing on them. I won't, I swear!
