It is your imagination that is taking over your thoughts. Best is to get yourself a nice cup of tea like chamomile, valerian root, or peppermint or watch some TV to cover the noises in your head.
While it is not uncommon to hear the woodwork cracking or perhaps even animals roaming outside your house, you should not let those noises get to you and starting to imagine all kinds of things that don't happen. You only make it worse because the next night, you will not be able to sleep thinking that those noises are present again.
Also, refrain from eating big meals at least 3 hours prior to going to bed because they make your sleep shallow and you will not be rested in the morning.
