If you look at another planet or a star, whether it’s through a telescope or whatever, you are seeing what that star looked like years ago.
Since they are so far away, it takes a long time for the light to travel all the way to earth. So what we are seeing isn’t what it currently looks like.
If a star that was 50 light years away exploded today, we wouldn’t be able to see that explosion from earth for 50 years. We’re literally looking back in time when we look up into space.

In space, temperature does not exist. Temperature is a quality of matter, and where there is no matter, there is no "hot" or "cold."
Now, when matter is cast into space (a coin, for example) It will experience blistering heat in the light of the sun, and wrenching cold in its own shade.
Up there, all things are half immersed in Heavenly Inferno, half encased in Black Endless Winter--all while the surrounding void is as tranquil and serene as only Nothing can be.
And while find that's frightening and severe, it's also poetic and awe-inspiring. And, so: beautiful.

Anyway, my favourite "space fact" is Bode's Law. Take the following sequence - 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48..., add 4, and then divide by ten. You get 0.4, 0.7, 1.0, 1.6, 2.8, 5.2... which is the mean distance, in A. U., of each of the planets (and the asteroid belt) of the Solar System. For some reason Neptune doesn't quite fit this pattern, so that is a good enough reason, in my view, to kick it out of the Solar System :)
The universe is constantly expanding. But eventually it’ll stop expanding and start contracting and eventually it will cease to exist.

'We are the universe experiencing itself'
I think this statement is one of the most amazing ideas ever. Carl Sagan articulated this idea with great verve in his TV series Cosmos:
“The surface of the Earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean. On this shore, we've learned most of what we know. Recently we've waded a little way out, maybe ankle deep, and the water seems inviting. Some part of our being knows this is where we came from. We long to return. And we can. Because the cosmos is also within us. We're made of star-stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.”
Human beings are the only known arrangements of atoms in the cosmos that are sentient and can reflect upon existence. Thus, we are a part of the cosmos that can observe itself, and we’re born of the universe’s children, the stars. It’s a romantic truth, backed up with hard science, and one that everyone should know.Physicists are now questioning whether time actually exists. 😲
Sounds like a waste of time to me. 🤭
that if there are any observers of us from a planet lightyears away from us they are looking at a past version of us. like they could be seeing us in the roman age still
Every major Galaxy has a black hole in it. It was never known until Sagittarius A stars orbital trajectory around an invisible object was discovered at the center of the Milky Way.
Interesting factoid: The Earth's Moon is moving away from Earth at a rate of about 3.8 cm (~1.5 inches) a year. Not to worry though... it's not going to leave Earth's orbit for billions of years.
That at times, Neptune is farther from the Sun then the planet Pluto (which I still consider a planet).
Also, Earth's moon is larger than the planet Pluto.
That if aliens millions of light-years away were to look at light from Earth they would see Dinosaurs.

that I we don't know most of the facts in the first place... that's fascinating indeed
That infinite planets with life have to exist statistically.
My favorite fact about space is if you go on a side you’ll go on the opposing side. Speaking of space, can a planet be not a sphere? Why not a Cube?
That space is finite and most of the matter is invisible
That the Universe is never ending. I have a hard time grasping that reality.
Black holes always seem to me pretty bizarre and mysterious..
The center of the galaxy is a blackhole
That the moon is made of cheese. What a resource!
That we are not alone.
It's so big. I like how big it is.
The moon is made of green cheese.
