“Firefly” is my favorite sci-fi series. Before “Firefly”, it was “Star Trek: the Next Generation”.
My favorite standalone sci-fi movie is probably “Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone”. Honestly though, there’s a lot of competition in that category.
Same with my favorite sci-fi franchise, which is probably “Alien”. They’ve done such amazing work with all of the creative potential and there’s still so much to tap into. I’m particularly excited about xenomorph and “Predator” crossovers. There’s so much potential in the “Predator” franchise too that crossovers between the two franchises seem to have unlimited potential. I’m both shocked and disappointed that more filmmakers haven’t made attempts at that.
“The Orville” deserves honorable mention. At first glance of this Seth MacFarlane property, it appears to be a spoof of “Star Trek”. There is some comedy, but it’s actually a really good genre-bending sci-fi series with great action, drama, and touching themes that keep you grounded in our humanity. Which is ultimately the through line of any great sci-fi production.
I totally forgot another honorable mention in “Farscape”. When i was looking for something that might fill the void left behind by “Firefly”, some people recommended “Farscape”. It has kind of a “Firefly” meets “Star Wars” kind of vibe. I would not say it’s as good as “Firefly”, but it’s definitely good! And it’s free on Tubi!
So hard- Galaxy Quest was- essentially- a parody of a parody- and with Tim Allen, was a unique movie.
Star Wars- Great premise. Possibly overworking the franchise with sequels and prequels.
Lost in Space- Nice in its' lameness.
SpaceBalls- Great parody from some great comedic minds, if you are in that mood.
Battlestar Galactica- seriously?
Star Trek. TOS. Always great. Interesting to see the predictions that did- and did not-materialize. But, it turned into another overworked- and overwoked- franchise.
Thanks for the MHO.
I was 8 or 9 when Wall-E came out. I usually watch it at least once every winter. It makes me wonder tho, I mean it's sci-fi but there's so much truth in it.
Definitely Space Balls. Mel brooks movies are always good.
Among the numerous space science fiction series and movies, "Interstellar" stands out as my favorite. With its stunning visuals and thought-provoking plot, it beautifully blends science with human emotion. I also admire the artistic elements and the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer, making it a masterpiece that captivates both the eye and the heart. 🚀✨

I have many favorites, usually in this order:
- Star Trek series and old movies
- Star Wars
- Spaceballs (definitely the funniest) :D
- Galaxy Quest - also very funny
- Something else: Stargate series (SG1, Atlantis, Universe), Andromeda, Orville, Farscape, Lexx, even Babylon 5 (after rewatching it)
Lost In Space was ok too.
Battlestar Galactica - not really among my top favorites, but still kinda ok.
As much as I love Spaceballs, I think Star Trek (at least in its' earlier form) is still the benchmark for SF.
I dismiss Star Wars, which George Lucas himself admitted was a Western.
I want to shout out to Lexx, which was weird in a good way.
Probably star wars but I enjoy the pre-disney star wars the exspanded universe but of all the stories, characters, lore, etc.
But I love it because of my father he's a huge nerd he saw star wars I think 7-9 times when it first came out. And he got me hooked on it early.
Out of these options I only seen the first Star Wars movie and I couldn’t really get into it. A movie I did enjoy was The Martian.
The original Star Wars trilogy without Jar-jar Binks and that whole CGI vomit. I also like a number of Star Trek movies, especially part 6, The Undiscovered Country.
Aliens. and the host of spin offs with that humanoid robot played by Fassbinder! So creepy!
From that list Star Trek & Star wars in the order.
I like most of the ones people have mentioned, but I did enjoy Firefly/Serenity, it's a shame it was cancelled so early.
When i was a child, my favorite science fiction writer was Robert Heinlein.
I should have added that I never was a fan of any science fiction series on TV or in the movies, but I did read a few authors such as Heinlein and Jules Verne.
There was nobody better than Heinlein at writing SF for kids.
I was always a Star Trek fan. Some of the later series have gone woke but it is better than star wars.
I liked a lot of these... and Buck Rogers as well... and Duck Dodgers (lol).
The Expanse.
Its so well done and such a fresh take on the Space Epic
Star Wars and Star Trek I remember a little bit about Battlestar Galactica
Star Wars falls under the fantasy genre not science fiction.
I mean it has space wizards, gravity bombs in zero gravity, how physics work in that universe changing at will and sound in space.
Star Trek. Even Star Trek Lower Decks. Kirk vs Picarrd... the never ending debate.
I love Spaceballs. Spaceballs is just a movie that makes fun of Star Wars and it’s hilarious
Out of all of the above - I choose Star Wars - but with a twist. Episodes 1,2,3,4,5, and 6 for me. 7,8, and 9 Never Will I see.
2001, a space Odyssey. I admit that I. Stoned to the wall on marijuana. That was back in the day.
Between the ones that you have mentioned, i picked star trek!
Probably Babylon 5. Great cast, compelling story, with a lot of growth in the characters.
For TV series, Babylon 5 or Farscape. (Controversial opinion: Firefly is overrated.)
It wasn't really science fiction ut GRAVITY was awesome
