1.2K opinions shared on Entertainment & Arts topic. I got my first guitar when I was eleven. By the time I was 17 I was a good rock lead guitarist. I quit in my mid-30s. Then I picked it up again when I was around 50. The muscle memory in my fingers needed for shredding leads was gone, but I could still play guitar. Once I started playing again, though, it started coming back and I started playing all kinds of gigs from folk to pop songs to Irish pub music. And I even started a rock band that ran for about 15 years until the covid lockdowns put an end to everything.
I can play some bass, but never learned any other stringed instruments. I can play some percussion, as well. And I'm a good vocalist.00 Reply

I started to take piano at 10, but I didn't like it too much. I could already read music as we were taught to learn to play the recorder in elementary school.
One of the courses we had to pick in Grade 8, to prepare for highschool, was an art class, and I can't draw for shit, but I could already read music so I picked music and in Grade 9, I choose the flute, and continued to play throughout highschool up until gr 13. (Wr had gr 13 back then) throughout those 4 years I learned the trombone, trumpet, clarinet, and the tenor and alto sax, and the piccolo.
I haven't played for a number of years but I'd like to think if I picked up a flute again, as I practiced I'd return to my profiency. The next instrument I want to learn is the Cello, as I find it so soothing and dark and mysterious. And beautiful. Lol

Yes! So, I used to play the piano I think since maybe 4th or 5th grade: I stopped for a while BUT! I’ve gotten in contact with my piano teacher and just met up with her for coffee. She’s so sweet and then in 7th grade, I moved to a charter school and all of us had to learn the recorder.

+1 yI’m a self-taught drummer and play a little piano now that I’ve taken some lessons… not so much to perform, but to have some background to write some music of my own.
Slowly learning and teaching myself Logic Pro too, so I can record and better produce and mix music as well.
10 Reply I love listening to all kinds of music, but I never enjoyed playing instruments. My parents made me take piano lessons and I tried the guitar when I was older. It never held my interest though. I have a lot of admiration for people who do play though because it takes an incredible amount of work to sound good.

+1 yI played the piano and I took recorder lessons in grade school. Piano was fun during the first five years but eventually I got bored of learning from a teacher so I quit and now I play by ear.

It's really fun and they have digital pianos for a lower price if you don't want a grand piano or don't have room for it. There are also harmonicas for a lower price but I think they are harder to learn. I had one and never learned how to use it. The flute is also cheap but I don't know how to learn it.

How many years did you learn the piano? I really want to go piano course but the instructor told me that I can learn in an average of 6 years so IM suprised it really take that long?

@astrophelle I learned piano from ages 8 to 14 and for several years I could read sheet music a year or two before by my practicing level but with all this time passing by I can't read sheet music that well anymore, I can still read, but not that well.

@astrophelle I have an 1886 William Knabe Brazilian Rosewood Grand Piano that is free to anyonje who will take it. All of the Ivories are intact. The harp is metal so you can tune it to A440 with no problems. It need a little TLC and 1 agraffe which cost 5 bucks. My wife wants the room back.

+1 yMastered the recorder. But EVERYONE played recorders in elementary school
In 5th grade, band was mandatory so tried flute but failed miserably, so the teacher moved me over to percussion, 'cuz I couldn't play anything else 🤣 Got pretty good at the mallets, but got in trouble for using only one hand🤣
Took guitar lessons for a while. Could play a little bit, but didn't have the patience for it

+1 yI played the saxophone (alto and baritone) for 8 years. Took two Canadian soloist awards in the nationals in Grade 12 and 13. I played off and on in a Jazz band for two years afterwards.
I sometimes play at night, when no one is around, just to keep it fresh.

11 ReplyPiano, two keyboard organ (like church organ), self taught acoustic guitar (don't get excited I stopped because my guitar broke.. and so did my little finger), hand drums and the recorder (alto and bass, not brilliant) and I was in 2 Choirs, one school and one professional (as a kid I got £5 to sing, hired with the full choir, at weddings.
