OMG, there are some great ones. And it's a matter of what kind of music you are into.

Jack Bruce was great.

But I'll name Glen Cornick who was with Jethro Tull before he started his own band, Wild Turkey. I saw Wild Turkey tour in 1972 and Glen freaking blew my mind. He played crazy shit on both 4 string and 6 string base.

Les Claypool is a great bassist but usually you can find him in many ranking as many old musician, but today there are kids who can play his bass lines quickly. I saw that many people over 40 year old never heard of new musician, human skills in general improve over the years, better and better musicians emerge, for example there are many people who still believe that pianists like Mozart or Beethoveen are technically unreachable, and they don't know that it is enough to look on youtube to find children who can play their most difficult pieces with their eyes closed, so imagine what today's pianists can do after years of experience

however i agree about that, bass is almost useless when you double guitar lines, but not all bass players do that, check out some prograssive metal or fusion bassist
