I always wondered about this.

Well, it's a skill like any other. You basically learn how to trigger yourself. You try and place as much of yourself in the character's predicament as possible and react as they would. It helps if you can connect it to a real memory in your own life. The hardest thing is letting your social barriers down; most of us are socialized from an early age not to cry in front of others. Of course in films, you can totally cheat by cutting the camera away while the props guy puts saline drops in your eyes.
Some can just emotionally do it.
Others use a cry stick. It slides under their eyes and makes their eyes water

As an actor, they learn how to do that. And sometimes, they just use eye drops. The scene cuts, they put eyedrops in their eyes that cause tears, and the scene resumes. Once the movie is edited, the viewer doesn't know that the actor is not actually crying tears.
I think some Mace would work better.
They put onion juice below the eye after cutting the take, and it causes them to water. That or they have some script girl show her boobs and tell the guy he will never get to fondle them. That might bring some tears.
Either that or they put really emotional wrecks in movie parts that require a lot of crying.
some like Demi Moore can cry on demand, using traumatic events as motive.

other actors use glycerin or other artificial tears, menthol sticks to make fake tears.
It's funny this apparently a big thing in the business. I remember listening to Mira Sorvino talking about how she had to learn to cry on command. And she was talking about her actor father Paul Sorvino always held that as one of the standards of a quality actor. Because they have a substance that the can dab below your eyes that will trigger your eyes to water. But it's one of those things that if you need that and can't produce it on your own then it's like you lack emotional range as an actor. So you're looked down on if you use it.
Probably think about all the sleazy shot that was done to them as child stars and what they have to sometimes do to get movie roles at those billionaire yacht parties.
https://youtu.be/sWqTiz8caoM?si=pg1rXvN4WKQFswAlCan’t remember for the life of me who said it, and I may have heard it all the way back in the 90s, so this is very dubiously sourced, haha, but I swear I remember some actor saying they’d put Vick’s VapoRub under their eyes so they’d water.
I’m sure some particularly good actors can just get themselves there emotionally, though, especially method actors.
You got to think of a bad memory and immerse yourself with the character. All there's like this weird eye feeling thing that's apart of it 😂
Easily, by thinking to a very sad event in your life that brought you to tears more than once and still brings out the emotion. We have all had terrible moments or events, and that is what they think about.
I made a 'training film' for the Sheriffs department while in the academy and got best actor, because I brought 'anger' to a theme, from past 'real' angry situations.
You just think about your most traumatizing thing that makes you cry.. but if you are a really good actor you can get into the feelings and emotions of the person you are playing and it will make you cry naturally..
I have never made myself cry on purpose for a movie seen but if I'm in the right mood, I can cry easily, even if I'm not in severe pain which is usually what triggers tears. It's a mental frame of interpreting the world and a state of mind.
Some really talented can drive themselves into emotional state and really start crying, and some are just using special eyedrops to force fake tears.
either they try to make themselves cry for real or they use tear inducing sticks under their eyes or fake tears
Digging into past pain or trauma? Listening to sad music or watching a sad video before? They're just that into the scene and the character?
Working themselves up and thinking about emotional stuff I embr hearing a story where when actors do argument parts they would yell at eachother a lot before hand and then go on and commit that performance hahhaa
i think they have someone just off camera that starts yanking out a pube 1 at a time until they start crying
One actress said she had cried real tears for her scene by remembering a tragic event that happened in her life years earlier.
Someone punched him in his balls. That would make any guy cry
They use eyedrops, onions, water, if they’re bad actors. Top tier actors think of sad events in their lives, and peoples rent that are due
I'm no not sure. It seems like a lot of artists tend to have more emotional trauma than others, so maybe it's not too difficult? 🤷
They think about all the sexual abuse the agreed to undergo to land the job.
by thinking of something super sad.
even imagined a tragedy can cause cry
I think Bilboes answer is spot on.
