Given how often video game characters are exposed to horrific violence and unspeakable horror, I think the list is kinda narrow. So off the top of my head, I'll say Manny Calavera. A fascinating (if dangerous) new world to explore, and besides:

As to Link, I'd be cautious; you do ALL the work, and top billing always goes to a woman who spends the entire game kidnapped or unconscious. You only get mentioned in the title of ONE game (well, technically two, but the second one is just a coincidental pun).

She can wield ancient magic, can take out multiple people by herself, and is a pretty fast learner. Can also wander around Hogwarts without any consequences whatsoever.
