Having been a teenager and then a twentysomething in the 1980s and 1990s respectively, I can say I enjoyed both, but definitely a shift happened as the music became much more depressing and despairing. Now this started in the 1980s in the UK, think Morrissey as Exhibit A, but also reached the USA with depressing "Grunge" in the 1990s. An interesting video essay on this from 2017, right after Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and later Audioslave fame, hung himself, titled "The Voices of My Generation Are All Dead." The first 6 minutes and 50 seconds are samples of depressing grunge music, so skip ahead if you want to get to the point of it:

Gag won't let me see videos on here but you were so lucky to have been a teenager and 20 something during that time. The music in both decades were freaking fantastic. I can't imagine what it must've been like to experience that as a teen and young adult!

Oh bummer, I hoped the video would post. Anyway, we had our teenage and young adult angst, alienation and depression, but I will give you that we had better music. What is coming out today seems all "on autotune", and not very creative. Even our raunchy music was more daring, whereas today someone like, for example, Cardi B's raunchy music just seems perfunctory and dull.

I agree wholeheartedly. Today's music sucks for the most part. There's not many bands/artists I can say I like or find authentic like I can with artists/bands from the 80s and 90s.

80s for me and I'm luckily enough to have seen The Smith's live

It certainly was because it was in a relatively small venue too

Damn, that is a hard choice. They are both so good and so different in style from each other. I love 70's music too. All of those true "rock bands" with great, rich guitar riffs and melodies. Led Zepplin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Eagles, Van Halen, Boston, Bad Company, Foreigner, Wings, Little River Band, Funk and Mo-town, Electric Light Orchestra, Supertramp, KISS, AC/DC, Pink Floyd.
Anyway, I love the 70s, 80s, 90s, don't get me started on music.
Between the 2 choices you gave me I'm going to give a slight nod to the 90s.

Mid to late 80s its an easy question for me. 80-82 I'm less excited about, whereas 90-94ish was pretty good. Really depends on my mood at the time and what I'm doing.

Between the two I'd have to take the 1980's because of stuff like this and other shredderific tunes.

I prefer the 70s but if the two decades in the poll, I'll take the 80s. People could still sing then, and the lyrics made sense.

There's good and bad from both! Enjoy it all.
10 Reply Neither... I'm only 18 and go for some newer stuff... but not rap. I do like some of the older classic rock however as do some kids my age... go figure!

There are definitely some good 70s songs but I'm more of a 80s and 90s lover.

The early 80s were good, but the rest of the decade sucked for music. The 90s were even worse and now, well don't even bother.
