5 is a little young to start getting him addicted to video games. Get him some age-appropriate books to read... and some sports equipment that he can play with... for whatever sports he enjoys... maybe just a ball. He'll have plenty of time when he's older to play video games.

Go with a Nintendo switch - because you can hook that up to the tv and it can be played portable. As for games, Mario games and Kirby games are great. Lego games are great, and sonic. I think with any gaming system, you will have to have a gaming system account. But you can set parental controls for it.
If you go with a 64, there are plenty of mario games you can give him, Legend of Zelda too. Playstation has a couple of sesame street games too. Also never hurts to just look for puzzle games like tetris

Hmm... how well can he read?
Well anything nintendo is perfect. If you’re going the N64 route ill suggest Yoshis Story. Its super easy and fun!
Mario games and Peggle. Sonic too but tbf there more hit and miss. Nintendo stuff is for sure the way to go. And I still say the DS is way better than the Switch plus DS's are much cheaper.
A child should read books and play outside, not stare into another stupid screen.
If you get the PS2 I recommend Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit if that interests him. Me and my dad used to play that all the time when I was a forest peanut myself and it was so fun.
PS2 has the most vast range of games
The Simpsons game was on there for oneIf you don't connect a system to the internet it won't have access to the internet lol. It doesn't have to be old.
I’d go with a Sega Genesis and have him play streets of rage.
I would say "no video games at all". Let them NATURALLY discover the things around them like they did back in the older "good ole days".
Donkey Kong (a very old title but great for kids)
You shouldn't teach 5-year-old bad habits.
Mario, Yoshi, banjo kazooie
Crash Twinsanity
I liked Mario, Crash bandicoot, and Spyro
