Yep. It's extremely common. We had a bear break into our car at Yosemite. We were camped out. We weren't in a full tent, just a lean-to that was completely open. I woke in the night with a bear and cubs strolling by 15 feet from where I was sleeping. They moved on, then came back an hour or so later. I heard a crash and looked up to see the culprit reaching through the broken window, opening the cooler, and snagging a loaf of bread. The bear broke into five cars in the campground that night.

I haven't been camping for years. But I still went camping for many years after that happened. Animals in the wild won't bother you unless they feel threatened or they have young nearby.

One time I was camped in the desert in a tent. A rattlesnake crawled under the tent. I was afraid of that because they are known to crawl in the sleeping bag with you to keep warm. It knew there was something warm, but I think it couldn't figure out how to get inside the tent.

Snakes crawling in sleeping bags is one of those things you hear about but don't think it's true. But they really do it. They are cold blooded animals. Finding nice warm places to hang out is one way to regulate their body temperature. It's the same as sunning themselves on rocks.

I have a few stories:
Once, some friends and I were backpacking in Yosemite. We camped one night and hung our backpacks high up, way out on tree limbs. My pack was hanging practically right above my tent.
I woke up in the morning and my backpack was gone. I found it a short way away. A bear had rummaged through it, stolen all my food, and slobbered on all over my stuff. I don't know how that bear got my pack down.

We had some friends who owned a luxury cabin on the shore of Lake Tahoe. On two separate occasions, a bear broke through the kitchen door and ransacked the pantry. The people finally rebuilt and reinforced the door and installed an alarm.

As a motor vehicle claims adjuster/damage appraiser, I saw several cars that had been damaged by bears.
A bear had grabbed the belt line of the driver's door of one car and pulled it down at least 6" or 8". That part of a door is highly reinforced so the amount of force required to bend that area is insane.

Bears are more scavengers than predators - curious, smart, resourceful and strong. But they aren't confrontational and there are few incidents of them mauling people. They are rarely aggressive unless cornered, attacked, or defending their babies.

All bears have the potential to be dangerous when humans get too close or don't respect their space. There are an average of 11 bear attacks in the United States every year, with around half of those being fatal.

It can be funny. Once saw a guy lock his car doors on his very fancy sports car - I think it was a Maserati - to keep the baboons out at Cape Point, only to forget about closing the roof. Cobras are fine. They move slowly and spit venom at you so as long as you're reasonably nimble (or fitted with titanium legs) you're only in danger if you try to pick the nope rope up.
