Why are people so up in arms about the whole Mickey Mouse Steamboat Willie public domain thing?

O think this one is special because even though the original steamboat movie is now public domain the character itself is still one of the most known character ever created.

With other public domain cases the characters are no longer relevant or even forgotten.

I saw a cartoon of Bill Clinton on a ship called the Lolita and he was at the wheel. I guess everyone called him Slick Willie when he was in office. I thought it was clever
