Why do movie directors have to ruin characters?

For example in the Godfather. They absolutely ruined Michael Corleone. For what? Shock value? I consider it lazy writing and directors who write scripts for the pure purpose of money should burn in the darkest parts of hell.

It's also the casting directors. Lol. I ditched watching Barbie once I heard who got cast and so I was like, what a let-down and from what I saw from trailers and spoilers in the end anyhow, it was nothing like the Aqua song lol and nothing like Toy Story Barbie's either lol 😂😆 or Ken's either lol. Sigh 😞😔 however, Ryan Gosling, at least, seemed to make that film slightly okay. Slightly ✋🏻
