" I sing to pass the time away,
The little that remains for me to live.
As one sketches upon the frost,
As one cheers the heart content,
By skimming stones across the pond,
I sing to pass the time away.

I have lived through a day of wonders,
Do you remember, you and I?
And I have scaled the wall of years,
With miracles filling my ears,
Our universe is no longer the same,
I have lived through a day of wonders.

Let these fingers now untwine,
As the brow unfurls from glory,
Our eyes were first to see,
The clouds beneath us lie,
And the lark at our knees,
Let these fingers now untwine.

We made moonlight for our palaces,
For our statues and our pride,
What matters now if they slay us,
The nights will fall one by one,
China has become a commune,
We made moonlight for our palaces.

And I would speak, and I would speak,
So adventurous was this life,
Where man took on nature's grandeur,
His voice above the forests,
The mountains, the seas, and the secrets,
And I would speak, and I would speak.

Yes, to pass the time I sing,
The violin bow wears thin,
The stone in the game of ricochets,
And how touching is my love,
Beside me in the slanting shadow,
Yes, to pass the time I sing.

I pass the time by singing,
I sing to pass the time. "
