Charleston was under attack by Union gunboats during this General PGT. Beauregard was inside. He remained calm. But Lt. George Dixon had an idea. He told the band to get back in their chairs and play "Bonnie Blue Flag."
Beauregard, at first, was a bit confused, but then the band started playing the song, Dixon looked back at Beauregard as they did. Taking a moment to understand what he wanted, Beauregard started singing, soon others joined until the whole church was singing it.
When they were done, the Union attack had stopped, the Confederate batteries successfully forced the gunboats to retreat. It sure does give me goosebumps to see such a high ranking officer singing, and that raise in morale being enough to drive off the gunboats.
What gives you goosebumps?
