I dunno--the 80s had some pretty horrific garbage--especially considering how much great music we had in the 70s. I don't think it's gotten worse since then.

The 80s had some of the worst music ever, especially in pop, but we had still had some quality rock in the mainstream.

True there WAS some decent music, but my GOD was there a LOT of trash. I mean REAL trash. It's kinda hard to even understand how it was POSSIBLE to come up with such garbage when the previous decade had so much talent. We haven't seen (or heard) anything so horrific since. With the possible exception of the absolute GARBAGE coming out of university "music" programs trying to "improve" on classical music by essentially swinging cats over their heads by their tails.

I did a deep dive for years into music history and some people agree music took a nosedive from 1974 onwards. I didn't agree at first, but I can now see how they say that. It went from artistic expression to purely being all about making money for the corporates.

Well, it seems music became more about image and trends than musical statements, originality or musical ability. People forget that bands like Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull etc all had number one records in the 70s. No one cares about how great musicians are these days. Like I say on here all the time, they are happy to listen to a preset on a computer program. 5 out of the current top10 songs on Spotify are all using the same one. lol.

Corporate greed erodes all industries.

- Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming platforms will give mere pennies to the artists you stream while giving the Music Industries / Music Labels the profit.

- All modern pop music are made up of repetitive lyrics & simplistic tunes making it easy to grasp by anyone (especially the younger folks) , full of pre existing beats in database, and electronically created synthesized presets to make the ‘song writing’ process as efficient & inexpensive as possible.

- When artists go on stage to perform, that is where the biggest margins are for that performer however most of the profit goes to the higher ups based on how the system is currently done.

- Artists are pressured to take credit for songs and speak in interviews / public space like award shows about music they never had a hand in writing or making because it gives into the illusion ‘YOU can do what they do, buy their music & consume their image so YOU can become as amazing & starstruck as they’re!’ Which is a falsehood that definitely contributes to selling singles on digital platforms / getting butts in seats especially by impressionable children.

The industry is greedy because the system influences that. Lack of creativity & lack of originality & lack of freedom / flexibility means more guaranteed profit. They don’t want to take risks in losing potential millions.

Popular music started to go downhill in the 90s. Prior to that, a lot of popular music still had musicians/singer/songwriters. Today it's more rap/hip hop and pop stars who are not musicians.

No more guitar solos in popular music, and music with acutal instruments is less popular than ever.

Not sure what started this shift. Maybe going from buying albums/cassettes/CDs to buying songs one at a time online helped. No more concept albums and fewer long songs

Yes, I read there were 40 something bands in the top 40 from 1980 until 1985 that had number one songs, and from 2020 to now there have been 3. No one cares about actual musicianship anymore.

. And you do know why it's so bad now days.. .. because everyone has learnd that's you can control and heal things with music and you can also control or cause distraction. With megahertz and frequencies.

They have also learnt what the right and left side of you brain does and what each side control. With in your brain.. so now they can use a frequency that shuts off the right side of your brain. And pump bad in the the left side.. and it's fucked up that music bands and elevator music is recording this crap. if your on hold on the phone also business are doing this to get you to buy it to think a certain way. And yes good a old government. . know and has known for a long time .. so I only like what I like.

I’d like to disagree because I like most popular songs as long as they don’t talk about drugs or anything mentally unstable like that in the lyrics. I can even tolerate rap though I love romantic Bollywood songs of Arijit Singh, Arman Malik, Alisha Chinoy and Shreya Ghoshal. I also like popular western music 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s honestly hard to listen to anything made after 2005 to be honest. My teenage stepson listens to music from the 90’s and so do many of his friends.
