I don't think the motive is population control.

I do think that the media/entertainment complex has an above average assortment of "alternate lifestyle" folks, and they want to normalize the mainstream reaction to alternate lifestyles so their lives will be more comfortable. And, in general, far leftists promote an ideal that each individual should be free to engage in any behavior, including what many of us would call deviant behaviors, without suffering significant consequences.
