Why are American culture obsessed with homosexuality?

Everyone seems to have a massively strong opinion about it.

They even wave flags. In Columbus all the coffee shops have massive flags! In Vancouver, Canada they take down the national flag for the gay flag during pride!

I am bi and I have met many bisexual people from Europe, South America and New Zealand and none of them act like the American gay sub culture.

And we don't have outspoken conservatives speaking out against it either. the Appalachian hillbillies are always talking about it "he's one of them QUEEEERS! God dammit!! Who else is GAY! Wanna know how to seduce a LESBIAN?"

Although it is expected that people are discrete and Americans think the expectation of discretion in Europe and NZ is a huge political injustice.


I do actually prefer USA to my own country, I just don't understand some of the culture. i find it really odd.

Well America was colonized by religious zealots, revered to in history as puritans. They were even considered to be fanatical by 17th Century standards, which why the English gave them license to colonize in the new world just to get of them. So there is long standing historical president to homophobia. That's the why.

As far as the flag waving goes... well everyone these days are adopting flags and waving them where ever they can get some type of media coverage. But its their god given right as an American... well according to the Constitution any way.

Honestly there was never a need for people to anti or pro anything until everyone started wanting to demand rights and equal protection under that law. Which something I totally agree with.

But I am tried of not being able to turn on the news these days and not see something about LGBTQ. I am not anit- LBGTQ, but I am pro-heterosexual. I never felt the need to state that or make a thing about being pro-heterosexual. But then again giving gay equal protection under the law and legal right to marriage was never an issue to me either... I am just tried of hearing about it and seeing it promoted every where. So I am not into flag waving and I am not turning out for any rallies or marches... but I feel there is a need for heterosexuals to take a look at what's goin on and promote our lives.

I respect, get and understand and can agree with gays, Lesbians and Bi-sexual... but this whole trans gender thing is not something I can agree or respect honestly. I am all about loving and embracing who you are and if you are gay, lesbians or Bi-Sexual I have think you should be honest with yourself and be proud of who and what you are.

But the whole trans gender thing is premised on a lie... if you were born with a Wang-a-Dang your a man... you can use science to manipulate your body, and medical treatment to mutilate it. But at the end of the day we all know what you really are and so do they. Somethings like gender you just can't decide for your self, like for example being gay is not choice its just who you are. Being gay is what you were born to be and you can not escape that fact. Well then being born a man is not a choice either because its what you were born to be and you can not escape that fact even if you comet gender suicide and chop off your man hood. I just can respect it honestly, because it is sad to me that your so insecure that you felt such drastic measures w
ere necessary. But seems like some type mental health issue to me and are these people getting that help.

LGBTQ has thrown or lumped up all the gays, and lesbians' and Bi-sexual upon under the same umbrella and people in general can not get on board with it... and so the flag waving starts and pro-hetero types are not going to speak out, when at their core they don't agree with what's happening and how some politicians pander to it for money and votes.

Sources have linked being transgender to having Autism and other mental health problems so you are definitely spot on. The few people I know that are transgender definitely have mental health problems stemming from that. One of my best friends now “brother” is surrounded by a family that is autistic. Their sister is full on autistic, their mother shows signs of autism and my friend also shows a tiny bit of her being on the spectrum, so I don’t think it’s far off that their transgendered “brother” is autistic

I personally don’t think the US is mature about it enough yet. I’ll bet it’s a generation or 2 away from what you have. I think there should be an openness without a branding on your sleeve.
It’s just sexuality, who cares if girls like girls or guys like guys.
I’d consider myself bi and don’t need to make a big deal of it. However I do like talking about it though since it’s a new thing for me

Yeah. With Europeans there is an expectation that it is not discussed. So people can do it behind closed doors.

And a lot of americans think this is wrong.

Well... yes people are fine with gay marriage and personal choice. But in the culture it is very strange to use American signifiers and signs of open homosexuality. Especially in rural areas. It is very weird to openly discuss it. I am bi and rural people just don't accept that in the countryside. You just don't mention it openly. But it is a normal descrete thing.
It is also rude to be loudly and openly homophobic. And to openly criticize homosexuality is considered very obnoxious. The whole culture is just more sexually discrete and restrained with what they say.

Although there are gay pride events a lot have fizzled out recently.

Gotcha. I honestly didn’t notice any of that when I was there. Everyone I met was fun and open. But then again it was a love affair trip with my girlfriend so wasn’t on my radar

You have to look at the religious aspect of the country. The majority of the US is religious, especially in the south. The majority of the people in positions of power are white, conservative men, who generally hold to principals against homosexuality. The movement of gay rights was a massive victory: for one, the odds weren’t in the people’s favor, and two, it showed just how far the country has progressed culturally.


Even so, here, just because the government says something does not mean that people accept it. There are still lots of religious folks out there who would love to see homosexuals taken out.


I do agree though, that people have taken sexuality to the extreme. Some people even make it their whole personality.

Totally agree I can get on board with gay pride... but LGBTQ has lumped all them under the same umbrella... and trans gender thing is one step too far. I also think it is unfair to a lot of gays, because they have accomplished so much. But I have gay friends that take offense to being lump together with trans genders. They are men and women that are proud to be men and women and their being gay does not mean they associate themselves to trans gender movement.

Because people contradict themselves and make being gay or bisexual as something different and a personality instead of just living their lives and blending in with everyone else. You don’t hear straight people out in the streets saying “I am straight” and make a whole YouTube channel around their straightness like you see a ton of gay people doing that in America. I think it’s also because schools teach children that “being loud and proud of past history keeps the situation alive, so being willing to be loud and proud to continue to teach me about past history” when in reality it just keeps the agenda of hating gays alive, it teaches people to still be racist, Etc
