Yes, but in a different way than it was during "Payola".
Now, it's all manufactured artists combined with marketing hype, concerts, and "shows", so there's focus on actual music and talent.
In other words, the music industry has become just that: an industry which means it is now a money driven machine to make more money. In one of the important things in business is that you don't like uncertainty. This means you stay with what you know and what works. So, we have the same shit musical artists who are more actors than musicians. It's the same reason why we have a dozen comic book or animated films a year now.

I feel bad for the young people of today.
Back in the 1970s, music and movies were fresh and inventive. Art and artists were still part of the entertainment process back then which is why you had the best original rock music and many fantastic movies created by visionary artists. For instance, if Star Wars had never existed, no one would green-light making it in today's entertainment world.

Well, Rihanna is both rather beautiful and talented, if have to admit. I am not a big fan of hers, but the first time I ever saw her, I thought "Wow, this girl is beautiful!". I do not care for much popular music of the 21st century, but her 2012 song "Diamonds" is very impressive. There's a good reason that it was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became, no pun intended, a diamond-selling record last April.

There's a lot of singers who seem to have artificial fanbases, and there are definitely some who get promoted entirely because of political maneuvering: Two that come to mind are Dua Lipa and Olivia Rodrigo, both of which were (possibly unknowingly) propped up by USAID psyops, which is also behind promoting a lot of punk rock bands that have strangely large followings in foreign countries (like Pussy Riot). Government agencies also (ironically) propped up a lot of gangster rap artists in the past in an effort to promote drug consumption in part of a fund raising campaign for supporting South American and African rebellions and other activities during the Cold war.

So yes, there is absolutely a lot of astroturfing in the entertainment industry. This was about music, but Hollywood and more recently phone/video games aren't really any different.

The modern music is full of fake auto-tuned music, and fake no talent corporate robots. What is most sad is the music-buying and listening public have no quality control anymore. They will listen to any old garbage and usually on their phones via streaming services. The current top 100 is totally unlistenable to anyone with half a musical brain.

Music Industry is not conspiratorial, it is a bunch of corporate shills that want nothing more than to maximize profits for themselves at the expense of those that they sign.
Spotify / Streaming services in general take from the artist and plug directly into the record labels’ greedy pockets & concerts are the only way for the artist to make money though the record labels take a lot of the cut from touring then you have the venues charging extra inflated prices for greed.
Why is pop music so basic & simple with good singers though not so intellectual diving lyrics? Answer: Anyone can ‘vibe’ to it and will buy it, main buyers are young people like teens / children so their parents will buy them the music which makes billions in revenue.
