What show still blows you away when you watch it?

For me, it's definitely Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I always end up finding something new to laugh at or discover that I didn't realize before. Gosh I love this show for it's brilliant writing and acting.

What's your go to show that just still blows you away?

Original Star Trek. Now that I am an old adult with a lot more experience and sophistication regarding TV and movies, I can appreciate more the production values and effort. Especially in light of the culture at that time. Things that young people today would take for granted were, for the most part, not see on TV or even discussed at the time. So, when they watch ST:TOS, these subtle details regarding the 1960s are oblivious to them. I am from that time, so I appreciate what was done much more.

Given that Wednesday, 27 FEB 2025, is the 10th anniversary of the death of Leonard Nimoy, I want to use this clip as a good example of what I am talking about. It's from the Season 1 episode "Court Martial" in which Captain Kirk is accused of negligence in the death of a crewman, Ben Finney, who used to be Kirk's friend, but they had a falling out.

First, Leonard Nimoy as Spock is excellent in this scene.

But, what I want you to notice are a few things.
First, notice that the prosecutor, Ariel Shaw and played by Joan Marshall, is a female. You likely wouldn't think anything of it since female lawyers are common on TV as they are in life now. When this episode first aired in February 1967, few women were lawyers and you never saw female lawyers on TV. But, Star Trek is a science fiction show taking place in the 2200s. Racism and sexism are things of the past on Star Trek.

Second, look at the 4 men "on the bench" presiding over the court martial and who will determine Kirk's guilt. The man in front of the bell is Commodore Stone, played by the late great Percy Rodrigues. He is the commander of Star Base 11 where the trial is being held and where the Enterprise, in orbit, is being repaired. He outranks Captain Kirk and the other 3 men on the bench. And he's Black. A Black man as an authority figure - especially outranking a White man - is not something you see on TV in 1967.
According to Stone, "I have appointed as members of this court Space Command Representative Lindstrom, Starship Captains Krasnovsky and Chandra."
3 different men from different backgrounds. Lindstrom is White of Swedish descent. Krasnovsky is White of Polish descent. But Chandra is Indian! A South Asian character on television in 1967 never happens. There's probably a few people who saw this episode who never had even seen what a South Asian looks like!

Today, none of this is shocking which is why it would be easy to overlook.
In a sense, despite Trump and his ilk, we HAVE progressed since Star Trek, but, looking back to those times when I was a boy watching this, this would have been... "shocking" isn't the right word, but "highly unusual" for television at the time. Ironically, watching this and other similar things in Star Trek had a significant impact on me not becoming a racist. For adults of 1967, seeing a Black man in authority was pretty much limited to Sidney Poitier movies, but not television where you never saw a Black authority figure. But since, I grew up watching Star Trek, I had no reason to adopt the stereotypes that I didn't see and wasn't told about by my parents who, looking back, I am very thankful for not being racists and acting like them.

I had to grow up and see the darkness of human nature before I realized the (liberal) idealism of Star Trek and how impactful it really was.

We also should remember the story told by Nichelle Nichols (who played Lt. Uhura, the Black communications officer). She wanted to leave Star Trek after the first season, but she was talked out of it by... Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr! He wanted to meet her and, when she told him she was planning on leaving the show, he implored her not to... As told by Nichols, King said about her role of Uhura on Star Trek:
"For the first time, we are being seen the world over as we should be seen. He says, do you understand that this is the only show that my wife Coretta and I will allow our little children to stay up and watch."

Fear Thy Neighbor. It just amazes me how a neighbor building a fence, or having a barking dog, or parking in the wrong spot can end up with dead people. It's scary and unfortunately, has caused me a little hesitation to even get to know my neighbors 😞

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is such a classic! For me, it's Breaking Bad. The storytelling, character development, and tension are just phenomenal. Every time I rewatch it, I catch subtle details I hadn't noticed before. The transformation of Walter White is mind-blowing, and the cinematography is top-notch 🎬. It's truly a masterpiece that continues to impress me.

Lost in Space is a great web series I’ll keep rewatching. The medical intern Judy is like an idol for me. So brave with pure intentions and hardworking. She saved so many people’s lives and even when she failed, she at least tried. She was the most inspiring character in that story.
