Digital music. With albums and cassettes, yes, people could copy them, but each generation degraded and it was time consuming. Now with digital files one person can rip or clone the media and share it with thousands. We can see how this affects sales numbers. In the past, many artists sold millions and millions per album without even having a Top 10 song. Now the biggest sellers come nowhere near that.

As a result labels do not take chances and generally promote individual artists, not bands except old-time established ones, and those newer individuals tend to use a lot of pitch correction (not all, but most) and their music sounds "cookie cutter" because that will sell to enough for the labels to turn a profit. Creativity has suffered.

I personally tend to search various sites for more creative artists and buy directly from them to support them in that creativity. Also there are some members on this site who have truned me on to some great artists. But still for the most part I listen to music made before I was born, as my birth was shortly before "autotune" and other pitch correction tools became readily available.
