Even if the pirates are the protagonists, do not make them "good guys." Antiheroes at best.

If you're trying to be at least somewhat realistic, then their ship of choice is going to be small to medium size and fast first and foremost. Pirates attack loaded down and less heavily armed merchants and avoid military patrols.

If you want to do something a bit different, then focus on privateers instead.

Ya he's an antihero who gradually becomes heroic. Very gradually. The true hero of the first movie is the female protaganist who becomes more fighter/hero

Nah but, well yes but, basically ensure to make the pirate parts credible. The setting is captivating enough to its intended audience that rather than reinventing a wheel your task is to show people a really credible wheel. Even just the backdrop of a busy harbour city with a bunch of pirates is already a very captivating scene.

well I absolutely love comedy in my pirate movies, but it may be overdone now.

A hot female love interest never hurts, but I think location location location is even more important. Scenery that leaves a lasting impression.

You can't go wrong with a good mutiny.
