I like some of his songs, but my claim to fame, was I met him at a hotel, a few years ago.

Well, he was the image of him ! Obviously he looked a bit older than when he sang the songs originally.

"but you wouldn't have known yourself" Actually I would have, I've known for years, he died December 6th, 1988, also known for years, his second wife Barbara, also died December 6th, but in 2011 and not 1988.
