Does your Movie DVD still play?

Question

Due to a recently discovered manufacturing defect, movie DVDs released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment between 2006 and 2008 may no longer work, a problem called DVD rotting.

FYI... Sony says a DVD can last for up to 100 years.

Warner Bros has released a list of possibly affected DVDs, and says to contact its support team for a replacement DVD or “a title of like-value” for movies that it can’t re-issue.

Here is the list of almost 400 affected DVDs...

Interesting, and good to know. I just found a DVD//Blu-Ray player and was thinking of setting it up. They’re all packed up in a couple boxes, but I still have all my old ones. Probably have some from that time frame.

Literally just bought a few used ones at a thrift store, like 20 minutes ago, haha. Will I ever watch them? We’ll see😂 But I’m trying to plug all the holes in the collection. Honestly, it’s cheaper than just having a bunch of subscriptions to multiple services, and MAYBE they’ll have the movie you want. I used to be all about the $5 DVD bin at the store, I always wanted to have the ultimate library, for my tastes anyway. But now I’m never really sitting around watching TV anymore. Maybe one day, though. And I’ll be ready with outmoded tactile media that may or may not be rotted😝

I hope they still play. I have a whole bunch of oldies but goodies on them that I haven't looked at in many years. My PC doesn't even have a drive for them. I have an external one though but I've never used it.

The history of these discs is interesting, the CD, then the DVD and the laser disc... each time adding more capacity to a small disc. But it seems like it came to a dead end when they came out with the USB sticks. When you can put way more data on a drive that is a fraction of the size of the discs and you don't even need a special player for it, and furthermore it's rewritable, that pretty much killed the disc thing. I suppose eventually they'll have something you can implant under your skin that stays with you for life and has unlimited memory.

All we eat h are DVD's. I'm too cheap to pay for cable. Really can't afford it. I have a massive collection. Probably about 300. I'll have to comb through this list. Thank you for the info.

Everything in our physical DVD/Blu-ray collection has been redundantly stored in our PCs and large external drives.

I haven't personally experienced DVD rotting issues, but I've heard about it affecting collections from Warner Bros due to a manufacturing defect. Although I have a really big collection of DVD's, only a very few times some seem not to play correctly. This in general due to physical damages as scratches or more rarely because of some accidental release problem. I didn't notice any particular problem with Warner Bross DVD's, but I'll keep the info in mind.

I do not own a dvd player or any dvd’s. Gave all the dvds and Blu-ray’s to charity about 14 years ago.  I have over 2000 films and tv shows stored digitally on a home server

None of my TVs have a DVD player anymore and I don’t own one… Which is kind of sad because there was a time growing up where we only watch TV using DVDs

Wow. I upscale HQ Digitized all of mine several years ago, so I do not know if the originals work or not. I just keep them to prove I am in compliance with fair use on the off chance some studio gets a wild idea.

I haven't noticed. Mild scratches and abrasion are bad. Brasso helps with that.

DVDs don’t last long , they scratch easily , vhs was better at holding up , but vhs had a worse picture quality.
