Name a villain you think was the actual guy?

Growing up and reading Lord of the Rings, I always found myself symphatizing and rooting for Sauron.

I mean, in the movies he's portrayed as this evil fireball eye, but if you read Tolkien's writings you find out he was actually an angelic being sent to Middle-Earth to bring order and progress. And this what he tries to do, while the Elves like to lord over everyone and keep a state of Great Stagnation. I don't know, I know the official version talks about a Dark Lord and Orc armies and Nazgûls, but honestly I see a lot of Elfish propaganda alongside their Gondorian henchmen. Plus, they steal ans destroy his property too.

The issue with Sauron was he was so focused on the end result of bringing order, he didn’t realize how many lives would be lost in the process and didn’t care once it happened. He has no regrets for the deaths of hundreds, if not hundreds of thousands, as a direct result of his actions. It’s all well and good to sympathize with a villain, it shows good writing, and props to you for taking the time to read the absolutely monotonous dredge that is The Silmarillion. I could never.


As for Poison Ivy, again, she is a villain that stopped caring about human life and instead began to prioritize plant life. To the point she would gladly commit genocide if it meant a stable ecological environment. Again, I can sympathize, but not so much that I agree with her.


Now, Castlevania’s Dracula (I’m primarily going off of the anime as the games were a bit before my time) decided to destroy the world because the church brutally killed his wife and celebrated her death. She was the only person to break his hundreds of years of self-isolation and truly loved her. When she died innocent and went to heaven and he, as a vampire, went to hell, she left heaven to be with him. The fact that she loves him so deeply shows just how much his rage and actions to commit genocide were, in their own twisted way, an act of love. If the world decided the one you loved more than anyone else deserved to die, wouldn’t you want to punish the world too?


Also, The Nowhere King. That villain made that entire fucking show.

I would never call him a good guy. But the books actually give him kind of a character. Not as a fleshed-out role, but his presence has meaning beyond the "evil overlord" cliché.
He is bassically satan though and he isn't involved in the militaristic side as that is more his followers doing like Saruman, Nazguls.
So no, he isn't the good guy. But he is much closer to be in the actual main plot compared to the movies where he is just a glorified surveillance system😅.

That part is completely correct though. Otherwise I agree he is clearly not the good guy and even more obvious he is the bad guy.
Elves are portrayed as too distant to hobbits and men to actually care about the world, while also lets call it embarrassed to admit their earlier choices in history.

Yes he is. He is a maia, which is pretty much the same as an angel. by the way the same race as Gandalf or Radaghast. Although I dont think they are the same "rank". This is by the way from the simarilion.
