It's been a while since I last read a novel that I really enjoyed. 😭

It's been a while since I last read a novel that I really enjoyed. 😭

If your really into detective/mystery type books I'd recommend any Noir genre book by Raymond Chandler his noir detective books are quite excellent.
I read novels by one of my former professors Robert B. Parker. Dr. Parker has passed away a few years ago but his novels are still out there.
yes, he was a pretty cool guy. He gave up the teaching racket when his books got popular and when Spencer For Hire was on TV he was a big celebrity. This is a picture of him that is on the back cover of many of his books, Ironically he is standing on the loading dock of the place I used to work.
Not only was he the inspirstion for the TV Show "Spencer For Hire" but he also wrote the Jesse Stone novels and Tom Selleck played Jesse Stone in the movies. I heard that the two of them became friends and if you ever watched the TV show Blue Bloods I swear that Tom Selleck is channelling Dr. Parker in his character.
Spencer For Hire was a good TV show, The first season had the gritty detective the Parker created. After that the made him more polished like most of the other TV private eyes.
In the opening shots of the Spenser for Hire show there is a scene where Spencer is on a rooftop an there is a helicopter trying to kill him. I was on a rooftop cross the street watching this being filmed.
I see 😯 There's something about old shows and movies that you can't find in movies and shows these days. Like Lethal Weapon movie series. One of my favourites action thriller movies. I always felt like an old soul. When I was younger, I'd wish I was born few decades earlier but oh well. At least I have all these cool movies, shows to watch and songs to listen.

I am more on the fantasy side. For mystery I can recommend the dresden files by jim butcher, Or rivers of london by Ben aaronovitsch (or similar). There is also Dan brown who isn't bad but overrated in my opinion. Which still means a lot as one of the best mystery writers in recent years.
Hey, I love fantasy too 😊 I usually read fantasy, adventure, mystery, legal thrillers, sci-fi, and historical fiction. I was thinking of diving into a good mystery next, but I’m totally open to suggestions from other genres too!
Thank you! I’ll definitely give a Brandon Sanderson book a try.
I'm a fan of Stephen King's work. I recently read Billy Summers. It's a thriller that I couldn't put down. I'd also recommend Fairy Tale. It's a fantasy and another equally well told story.
I'm currently reading "A Little Life" by Hanya Yanagihara. It's a beautifully told story that regularly brings me to tears. At times, I can't put it down. Others, I have to; it's so intense. I'm also reading The Oligarch's Daughter. So far, a good read.
The Book Theif by Markus Zusak. You'll be bawling out your eyes by the end of it, and if you're not then still the book will deeply impact you. It's not exactly a mystery novel but it stays on you and you just can't keep the book down without taking 6 hours to just finish it and then close it and then watch the wall for 5 minutes to actually digest all that complex emotions the book gives you. And Markus Zusak wrote it so well that you won't even remember you read anything, it'll be like you lived a whole another life.
This book is exactly like the song 'Apocalypse' by Cigarettes after sex.
Noooooo!! 😭 I have love hate relationship with such kind of stories. I mean I get absolutely immersed in the story. Get hooked but then (as you said) I end up feeling miserable for a while.(Couple of days).. Have to eat ice cream. It helps me feel better, lol.
The way you described it... Sold!! I'll check it out, for sure 😊
Great! It's one book which internet didn't talk enough about but it's a booktok book. Way too underrated.
I do.
And if you’re in the mood for a mystery that actually keeps your mind busy, try The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides.
It’s sharp, psychological, and the twist lands exactly where it should.
Nothing overdone, nothing predictable just a clean, satisfying mystery that pulls you in.
I’m into true crime books , I haven’t read a Mystery book in years but if you like true crime , I recommend you read Nightstalker , it’s a great true crime book about the serial killer Richard Ramirez. So far one of my favorite true crime books I read
Sleeping with a Psychopath.
THE Sunday TIMES TOP TEN BESTSELLER
A Divorced Woman. A Dangerous Man. A Devastating Affair.
‘You’re right. It is totally extraordinary. My life is like a film; you couldn’t make it up … 'But there’s something I have to tell you,' he confided, as he leaned across the table towards me. ‘I’m not normal.’
I read novels, and also books on historical facts I find interesting.
As for novels, I like mistery or thrillers (books that are easy page-turners) and older work like the books by French writer Victor Hugo.
I have more books on the shelf waiting to be read than time to actually read them.
If you're going to read something by Victor Hugo, check out his 'Les Misérables'. It's not easy reading at times, as he drifts off towards subjects that were fitting for the times he wrote it in. But the underlying story is beautiful, told on a very human level, with feelings that are of all times. I read it in original version when I was 14, and read it again several times since. My grandmother asked if I could lend her my books, so she could re-read it. She then told me it was my grandfather's favourite literary work and that he always cried when he put it down.
Forget about any movie version you might have seen. They only skim the surface of what is a very intricate story. It's a lengthy book, either in 3 volumes or in one volume over 1,200 pages long. There may be summarized versions out there for students. Get the real thing.
This is the foreword the author wrote:
"So long as there shall exist, by virtue of law and custom, decrees of damnation pronounced by society, artificially creating hells amid the civilization of earth, and adding the element of human fate to divine destiny; so long as the three great problems of the century — the degradation of man through poverty, the corruption of woman through hunger, the crippling of children through lack of light — are unsolved; so long as social asphyxia is possible in any part of the world; — in other words, and with a still wider significance, so long as ignorance and poverty exist on earth, books of the nature of Les Misérables cannot fail to useful.
What would you recommend as essential reading?
agatha christie and michael connelly are a safe choice. literally you'd be fine just getting one of their most popular
if you read them already then check out The Whisper Man by alex north. The Glass Key is good if you want kinda like a noir story lol
My eldest brother would bring home many mystery novels when I was a kid, Agatha Christie was one of the first few authors whose work I read while growing up (read only few books though). So, thank you for reminding me!! I'll definitely check out Agatha and and Michael's novels. I'm wondering whether I should begin with The Whisper or The Glass Key. I guess I'll just flip a coin because I'm too indecisive 😂
Used to. The James Patterson "Alex Cross" novels are brilliant.
If you can find secondhand copies of them the Alistair McLean books were very good too. I just found them on Audible last month. McLean died around 1987 but he wrote some classics of the genre
I do not, honestly haven't read a book in quite a long time, I was never much into reading books, always preferred the movie adaptation, guess the problem is I'm not patient enough and get easily distracted. The last book I personally read was October Sky (originally called Rocket Boys).
October Sky was a good read, and the movie was a good watch too. Part of my problem is I get too lost in my imagination, so it takes forever to finish a book plus my attention span isn't the greatest, so I get easily distracted when reading, and my imagination running out of control is a big distractor lol.
Unfortunately I don't have the time to read novels anymore, though I was an avid reader of Frederick Forsyth, and his spy thrillers.
Check out the Inspector Jury books from Martha Grimes. 🙂👍

Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. If you haven't read already, you must!!! Just read 20 pages for me. Rest you will read on your own 😂
And no. If you are about to say that you have watched the movie. Well... Movie is shit. Like really really shit. Even the story does not align with the movie. "Don't judge a book by its movie" lolol
The entire story is different in movie.. only the core concept is same. Everything else is shit.
Also, I am working on my own novel. It's also Mystery, crime thriller. But with a very realistic approach. It's not complete but you can read.
No movie does justice to the books 😂 I mean, look at Harry Potter movies for example. The fourth movie was really bad but I enjoyed watching rest of the movies. I wouldn't say movies were better though because they made lot of changes in the movies and they cut out many crucial scenes because otherwise movie would be too long. So, I get what you mean. I read somewhere of Dan Browns books when I was a teen and I really enjoyed it. So, I'll definitely try this one 😊
Will I get it for free? 😝 Jk. Sure! I'm always open to reading interesting stories from new writers!
You can get it free :)
You can even get it before publishing :)
I am not a full time writer, so i am not writing for money.
I am a Cyber Security Engineer, my job is enough for money 😂
Sure... but can we do it in DM?
Strictly crime and horror fiction don’t do mystery. Maybe i might take one of these recommendations !
I love reading mystery, sci-fi, adventure, fantasy, and legal thrillers—like John Grisham novels. I avoid horror fiction as I get scared easily and don't want to have nightwares 😅 Michael Crichton’s Timeline is one of the few books that kind of has a bit of everything I enjoy: sci-fi, historical fiction, suspense, and adventure. I actually read the book before watching the movie. Not sure if you’d like it, though—maybe check out the synopsis first 😅
Thanks for that I will have a browse online.. I’m more Ramsay Campbell , Neil gaiman , dean koontz , Clive barker , Shaun Hutson. Not long finished “ mister b gone “ by Clive barker ,.. kinda fantasy horror with great humor too … you might want to have a read ,, not all horror is scary
Start with the Thomas Lynley series by Elizabeth George "A Great Deliverance". She's the best British mystery writer ever, and she lives in Seattle.
Mystery... Robert Muchamore wrote both CHERUB and Hendersons boys,
They aren't mysteries but still good and total 25 books across both series (even though CHERUB it's self is 2 sub-series)
I like some horror novels, but you probably wouldn't like them :P
But we both like fantasy, like Harry Potter books, or The Chronicles Of Narnia ;)
I also like science fiction :)
PS - I like some detective novels about Sherlock Holmes, Poirot, and Miss Marple.
Definitely not horror!! 😅😭 As I get nightmares. True, we do! I absolutely love fantasy and adventures books. Wasn't surprised when you told me you like these two. 😝
Great choices!! So did I.
Ah, I almost forgot... adventure novels too, Jules Verne is one of my favorite writers, he was able to combine science fiction with adventure in several novels.
If you haven't read The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov, you really should. It's Science Fiction but it's also a whodunit.
read the Bible, it's got a twist...
It's a love book, but it's hard to figure that out when getting stuck in Leviticus.
My girlfriend does. I never get the time to read books and, most of the ones I do read are about music or t. v. shows I love.
I am more into real-life/history books.
Yes but I can't remember the name of the last mystery I read
Anything by David Baldacci
A mystery? I oppose mysteries! I cheated to see who did it, then read the story but it didn’t match. So i recommend don't read mystery.
Yes. I love reading novels. No i can't recommend any good mysteries. They are all so obvious.
Jonathan Kellerman, Open Season
You’re welcome!
Have you ever tried the Lord Peter Whimsy books?
