Anyone else think rom-coms should just be called romance, when there is no actual comedy?

Seriously, most rom-coms that i see have absolutely zero comedy, and only slightly awkward moments, with will-they/won't-they scenes. Why even call it a rom-com, when there is absolutely no comedy?

The “comedy” in rom-coms is misandrist. Men perceive the bile with which it is written and therefore don’t get the joke. Women think it’s hilarious though. That’s the whole point. So nobody is going to take the com out of rom-com.
I can’t think of a single movie that wouldn’t have been the subject of widespread rage and ultimately canceled if the “jokes” were flipped against women instead of men. If even half as many negative observations are made of women, the movie ends up a drama on the lifetime network demonstrating that women are just misunderstood victims of misogyny and if it weren’t for those evil men, they would never do anything wrong.

just because someone in particular doesn't get it... I don't think it should be renamed

for example... at one point, Aaron Rodgers was called the GOAT, the Greatest Of All Time... and I don't think they would have accepted to rename him to the Shittiest Quarterback I Ever Seen Playing or... SQIESP

if others like him that much... fine by me, but I still think he's awful, lol

Agreed, with some exceptions; . eg. Bridget Jones’s Diary series, Pride and Prejudice movies, How to lose a guy in 10 Days and Four Weddings and a Funeral and similar movies.

99% of everything is crap. Rom-coms are no exception. There are still gems. Crazy Rich Asians springs to mind.

The “coms” part is what girlfriends need to gaslight their boyfriend into seeing the movie claiming it’s a comedy and not just a romance

They call is “com” bc since Shakespearean times anything that ends on a positive note (no deaths) is a comedy, as opposed to Romeo and Juliet, which is a tragedy….

depends entirely on the movie. there are certainly funny rom-coms

It is just production companies making up the genre for each movie or TV show of what they think it is.
