Could MTV-style spring break shows ever come back in the streaming era?

Why isn't there a show like MTV Spring Break or BET Spring Bling anymore nowadays?

I was looking at past old videos of MTV Spring Break/The Grind from the late 90s and early 2000s where you had a young, prime Halle Berry hosting and presenting LL Cool J for a performance.

You also had The Notorious B. I. G., Usher, Ja Rule, Ashanti, 'NSYNC, 50 Cent, Ludacris, Destiny's Child, Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, and Britney Spears, who were the absolute biggest stars and artists of that time. I also noticed how everyone looked so natural back then without BBLs or fake veneers. Everyone just had natural bodies. Most importantly, nobody had smartphones out holding them in the air like they do nowadays.

For those who aren't familiar with MTV Spring Break and BET Spring Bling, they were televised spring break events held in places like Daytona Beach, Panama City Beach, and Cancun. They featured huge daily pool parties, dance competitions, and live performances right on the beach from the biggest names in hip-hop, pop, and R&B. They defined the youth culture of that era.

Today, networks don't make these shows because social media took over. Instead of tuning into a cable TV show to see what people are wearing or listening to, people just look at TikTok and Instagram. Music festivals like Coachella and Rolling Loud have also completely replaced televised spring break concerts. On top of that, networks like MTV and BET shifted away from music videos and live music events to focus strictly on cheap reality TV shows.

Is it possible to bring this back somehow? Could a streaming platform like Netflix or Hulu bring back a show like this to give us good, real music to dance and party to, instead of the tired music and boring hosts we get these days? Or is that era completely gone because of smartphones and internet culture?

I could see a hybrid: a big streamer partnering with a festival, heavily edited, with nostalgia branding and a curated, more inclusive aesthetic. But the “everyone watches the same spring break show at 4 pm on MTV” moment is gone. You’d get a fun tribute, not a true return.
