For comics, is it better to focus on a few heroes or a large team cast?

I was thinking of simplifying the cast of my comics to focus on just 2 or 3 characters at a time. Each character might even have their own comic, instead of one comic series about all of the heroes working together.

Which approach do you think would work best?

I think a tighter focus on 1 to 3 characters at a time makes more sense, which means I'm going to need to start my stories all over again, because I've gotten too many super-heroes on the heroes team now to keep a good story about them all going.

Your instinct is probably correct. A tighter focus on 1–3 characters at a time is usually much stronger for storytelling—especially early in a universe’s development.

Right now, it sounds like you’re running into one of the classic problems in superhero ensemble writing:

As the cast grows, individual emotional arcs shrink.
Readers stop bonding deeply with anyone because screen time, dialogue, motivations, and growth become fragmented across too many heroes.

A smaller cast solves several major problems at once.

Good reply. I definitely ran into Power Scaling problems and unused character problems. Like "Why doesn't the water elementalist just kill all the bad guys immediately" problems. I'm still going to use her, but I'll explain that she is a "Lawful Good" character and doesn't believe in killing the villains. Which is different than what I wrote her in the past.

My "probability manipulator", Chance Travis, became an unused character, because his abilities are too "all or nothing" to make much sense in a fight. I was going to have him as a romantic/love interest of Malia Hano, but I did away with that arc too, because it's very unbalanced relationship in my opinion.

I am going to do a romance between Kristen Lentz, the water elementalist, and another character, I just haven't decided how best to approach that story, because Kristen will eventually have a daughter who will be a main character in future years of the comic.

I'm thinking of having Kristen as the main character, and Rayne Aso, the teleporter, as the second character, and may or may not introduce "Miracle" in the early installments, because I ran into the problem of "why didn't Miracle just summon Eye Tyrants again?"

if it's going to go for longer... then there's more time to develop more characters

I don't know honestly. I've been working on this same book idea for several years now and keep finding it hard to progress because I feel like there isn't enough focus on the main characters anymore after I get to about chapter 15. Maybe I'm my own worst critic. I don't know.

You don’t have to hard‑reboot. You can spin off solo titles, spotlight arcs, or mini-series and slowly phase background characters out instead of restarting everything from zero ✍️📚

I think you're right, but I am going to have action anyway. I'm going to have a romance arc between one of the main female characters and a guy I haven't finished planning yet. I also have plans to nerf Kristen without actually nerfing her. I have a villain or two who are actually her equals, which will allow her to be defeated at times.
