What do you feel about character and story deconstruction?

When you hear that a movie or TV show is in the works that expands or continues an existing story and a writer, director, or producer uses words like "deconstruct" or "re-imagine", what comes to your mind?

I hear, " Let's totally disrespect the original author and historical audience ideas and create something that everyone will hate. Now lets make Hamlet a black transvestite in a wheelchair"

I think it means taking classic stories and characters, stripping away their archetype to examine the psychological reality, trauma, and inherent flaws required to maintain such an identity. Basically, ruin the story.
