I have no idea what "power metal" is, but the vast majority of current metal is shit. Having just listened to some power metal, I can see a certain amount of appeal, but it comes across more as pompous than anything else. It's like "Hey, I wanna make something epic, but I can't."

Reminds me of an album KISS made but that many feel was KISS's lowest point, KISS's 1981 album "Music from The Elder".

I do like power metal 🎸
It feels very cinematic to me, like a fantasy movie in music form. The big vocals, fast riffs, and epic themes remind me of anime battles or RPG soundtracks. Bands like Helloween or Blind Guardian make me visualize whole worlds while listening, which really feeds my inner art-nerd and storyteller 🤘

I liked early metal when it first came out up until the late `70's when it was all about their hair and stretch pants and nearly all of it sounded exactly the same. By the mid `90's, it got good again for a very short while, then it all turned into who can scream the loudest and growl the deepest and play the loudest and fastest!! Again, it all sounded exactly the same!! It's like Steven King having a nightmare: Lemmie guess, the monster grabs me and eats me, right? BOOORRRING!!! Been there, done that!! What else ya got?

a couple of my friends are into that, but they're also instrument players, so they can appreciate much more than I do... lol

not that it should matter or make much of a difference, lmao... but it is one of the factors and often, that's what they can't stop talking about...

guess I would be more inclined to the progressive/alternative kinds of metal... mostly, anyway

I'm much more into Progressive Metal and Progressive Rock. But definitely NOT instances of "rapping" or pitch-less "growling". There's also a lot of Symphonic Metal that sounds pretty good. by the way, how does Power Metal compare to Heavy Metal?
