Do You Like Black Metal?
Example of it below.
Black metal is something that I could never get into. Live, I can dig it just for the intensity, but I don't really enjoy it. Heaviest I'll really go is djent like Meshuggah (although they're not my favorite style/band). All the best for the black metal fans out there. I respect the genre, but I have to pass on it. My ideal is sort of in the prog/djent subgenres.
(Meshuggah for reference)
I have these general issues with black metal:
-- I feel the melody gets lost by the speed and intensity of it. There's so much complexity/fast notes/stuff crammed together that it becomes too muddy for me. Same with death metal for me. Because of the speeds, guitar rhythm choices (sixteenth/eighth notes), and the common use of diminished/augmented scales, I feel it often gets formulaic or blends together. Drum-wise, it doesn't particularly interest me because of the overuse of blast beats.
-- I don't have any lyrics to connect to or dig in the music. I don't really have any major issue with religions, so I can't really get behind them... (granted, I have a feeling people aren't listening to heavy metal for crystal clear and comprehendible lyrics haha)
-- I'm more of a mid-range scream kinda dude. I don't particularly like too many high shriek screams in black metal or low growls/extra deep fry screams in other genres
This is all not to mention the Death Metal stereotype of recording your songs in a tin can lmao. That's not true for all though.
I'm picky when it comes to Black Metal. For example, I can't stand Burzum. I like Varg Vikernes as a Youtuber on his channel "ThuleanPerspective" although his older music is uncreative and sounds like shit. This is the type of Black Metal I like, but it's few. I'm not huge into the genre, but some of the bands in it I like. Although at times some bands just scream "Look at me! I'm satanic! Can't you tell by my black clothing and makeup?"
Not really my thing, but some of the lyrics are cool.
Thanks 😊
Not into it
More into soft metal like Deftones

Sometimes, but generally I would prefer when it's sort of crossed over with a subgenre of metal that I prefer, like progressive metal or power metal or speed metal. For example, Arcturus is great. Some of their songs have the black metal elements, but as a band they're not mainly black metal. (For progressive metal, since I mentioned that, please everyone listen to Ayreon)
I generally don't like a lot of screaming in a song. I prefer it be used sort of as an accent type thing. I really like how Manowar's singer screams sometimes, but he doesn't flat out "sing" by just screaming. That kind of thing gets old fast to me, so that's why I like Arcturus who only sometimes scream. Some of their songs are pretty screamy but then the next song on the album comes up and it's usually back to more usual singing.
I’ve loved it ever since I bought this album when I was a kid. It was this old dimmu Borgir album, with another band. First 4 songs were dimmu borgir and last 4 were like an alternate band of dimmu members I think?
That was the first song on the album. Can’t seem to find the whole thing though.
After that I was hooked on black metal.
I fuckin found it. So happy, yay!

I don't like it. It's just so noisy and disturbing and causes me headaches. It's just like madness and stuff. I just can't hold hearing them. I like songs and music that calms me, because it's better for me to clear my mind to concentrate more in what i am thinking about.
It tries too hard to be "edgy" and comes off as sad and pathetic.
Long hair skinny ass european guys trying to scream in to a mic and headbang to what is laughably called "music" is tragically hilarious, and leaves me with 0 hope for humanities future.
Your opinion doesn't matter to me. But to resort to racism and claim it's "skinny ass European guys" that are involved in Black Metal is purely ignorance. There are Indian black metal groups, Lebanese, Egyptian etc.
@InTimoreDei You must be the dumbest person I've ever met on here, and that's saying something.
There are black people who are nazis, so... not all nazis are white supremacists? Is that the kind of argument you're chasing here? Also, if "my opinion doesn't matter to you" then why reply at all? Kindly fuck off :)
Wow...
What does black metal have to do with nazism and racism? Not all musicians are racists and nazis.
@InTimoreDei But you are.
Whatever you say. Hahaha.
Punk and Black Metal are my two music obsessions. Here's a Russian black metal band called Batushka.
Black metal ist krieg!
Used to listen to a lot of it. But can't stomach it anymore.
However, some of the early Arcturus albums are really spectacular, genre transcending truly creative works of music.
As much as most of my peers, friends and family look down on me for listening to black metal, I really do love it. Along with other subgenres of metal and ironically, classical symphony.
It sounds adrenalating. Just to add, I'm a kind and level headed guy that doesn't like violence or anything vindicative, so people are often shocked when I tell them I listen to it haha.
Yes, I love it.
There's so much variety in it, which I think is one of the reasons why it's so nice.
Yes. It is not my favorite sub-genre but I do enjoy the classics like Emperor, Immortal, Darkthrone, Bathory... I prefer the more thrash/death influenced bands most. That said I haven't been that excited by anything new in recent years.
I like Behemoth a lot, but not my favorite genre... in a lot of black metal there is screaming more than growling... and i prefer growling (hence my love for Behemoth and subsequently for Nergal <3). Other than that i'm more of a death metalhead, a power metalhead, a heavy metalhead or a thrash metalhead ;)
I like the odd song, i wouldn't say i loved them. I saw Cradle of Filth live a long time ago and it was pretty cool... especially as it rained like crazy when they came on... then the sun came out and all you could see was steam
The heaviest I’ve listened to is Slipknot, though I only like two of their songs. Used to be hella emo, still listen to lots of rock but couldn’t get into excessive screamy stuff
It's not my favorite, and I don't tend to follow it, but I do like a few bands. Dimmu Borgir, for example.
Like the black metal from the 80's and 90's but more recent black metal hasn't done much for me.
I prefer Power Metal since I like to be able to comprehend the lyrics.
It's my second or third favourite genre. I like the more melodic bands like Dissection and Immortal.
Naw, it's fucked, absolutely rife with overt satanic symbolism and stupid gimmicks.
No and I don’t consider it music
Naw, I don't listen to "music" that sounds like it comes from the bowels of Hell.
