Can you say something is or isn't art because of how it was made?

This is a conversation a lot of artists are especially sensetive about lately because it can get uncomfortable really fast. But I've gotten into some very deep perspectives about life in general from this question. So naturally it's one of my favorite topics.

Something is art because of the effort put in

You absolutely can talk about *how* something was made, but that alone doesn’t decide if it “is” or “isn’t” art 🎨

Art isn’t just the process or the tool, it’s also intent, context, reception, emotion, and meaning. A photo, an AI image, a meme, a painting, a performance can all be art depending on how they function in culture.

But it’s totally valid to criticize methods ethically or aesthetically without denying their “art” status. That’s where the conversation gets really deep and spicy 🔥

You can find beauty in something that happened by accident, but generally, it can only legitimately be considered "art" if there is knowledge, intent, skill, and initiative involved. I don't think you can scribble a bunch on a piece of paper like toddler and have it seriously be considered "art".
