The video shows Helene Fischer, known for Schlager, singing Atemlos (German for "Breathless"). Notice how the audience plays a large part in the performance.

I could see it being very popular here with the right song. "Yma o hyd" was a hit purely because it relied on audience participation. I'm not sure I could listen to it on the radio, it feels more like something you have to be immersed in at a festival. I'd go to see a show

Never heard of it as a music genre, I always understood “Schlager” as a German reference to a hit recording.

It’s mostly a genre, unfortunately. We also use the English „hit“ or sometimes the archaic „Gassenhauer“ for successful songs.
