Which TV show broke your heart after an amazing first season?

Often the first seasons raise the bar so high that it seems impossible to fail. Then, slowly or abruptly, something breaks.

Think of a massive, universal case like Game of Thrones: for years it was considered the definitive series, capable of redefining global television production standards, featuring layered writing, complex political intrigues, and unpredictable plot twists that kept entire communities glued to the screen discussing every single theory. Yet, the moment the script ran ahead of George R. R. Martin's original books, the quality plummeted dramatically. The storytelling started rushing way too fast, characters lost the psychological consistency that made them unique, and geographical distances were crossed in a single episode just to wrap up subplots in a hurry. The final outcome left a bitter taste in the mouths of millions of fans, proving how a narrative empire can crumble in just a few episodes.

It is not the only example, of course: it often happens that writers drag things out just to renew contracts, or showrunners change and lose the original direction, turning a brilliant product into a boring style exercise or a pile of clichés (La casa de papel is a good example). Reaching the end of certain iconic series sometimes feels almost like a chore rather than a pleasure, and the finale—instead of closing the circle in a satisfying way—ends up demolishing years of affection for the characters.

Lost fell apart in season 2, and then I only watched the last 3 episodes after that.

1883 was brilliant and could have gone on for years with Isabel May, and they killed her at the end of season 1 and thereby didn't have a season 2. Her career still hasn't recovered or gone on to the heights it should have.

The Night Of..., starring the mesmerizing Sofia Black-D'Elia and written by the same guy who wrote Moneyball, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Schinder's List, had a brilliant season 1 ending, but then never did a season 2.

The Bear had a great first episode and very good first season. Then in season 2 they all got full of themselves, especially one person, because of the attention they were receiving and it ruined the show.

Despite these examples, the biggest thing I hate in television is when a series is great for several years, then they let it fall apart in its last 3 or 4 years, just so they can keep churning out episodes to make money. Gilmore Girls, The Crown, Mad Men, This Is Us, House of Cards, Friday Night Lights, Big Bang Theory, Friends.

The best shows are those that get better and better and better until the end. The West Wing, Downton Abbey, The Good Wife, The Sopranos.

"Earth: Final Conflict"

It had a fascinating initial premise and cast. It's 3 years after an apparently benevolent race of aliens, the Taelons, have come to Earth and help solve many of the world's problems. The head alien is Da'an.

However, the protagonist William Boone (played by Kevin Kilner) was killed-off at the end of the first season - disintegrated, in fact, so there was no chance of the character coming back. It was an ignoble ending for that character.

The replacement character (Liam Kincaid) had the warmth of an enema and the stories got worse.

The hot babe Lili Marquette (played by Lisa Howard) then got less screen time after the second season and was gone entirely in the final 5th season as were the Taelons.

By the end of the series (5 seasons), only one character was still with the show from the beginning and it was nothing like the first season. The 5th season was like a different show. It didn't matter to me though because I checked out by the end of the 2nd season.

It's called The Peter Principle: A Theory of Why Everything Goes Wrong. The second season was only made because the first season was unusually good, partly due to non-reproducible reasons such as chance.

Mindhunter is the most recent one that has let me down.

Season 1 felt like watching a living art installation: philosophical, visually stunning, perfectly scored. That final maze reveal and the bicameral mind concept blew me away.

It broke my heart in Season 3. Once they left the park, it lost the mystery, the tight structure, and emotional core. It became slick sci‑fi, not that haunting, existential western I fell in love with.

Game of thrones the way it ended wasn't even worth watching
