Looks Fade: Heartwarming Photos of Aging Dogs

Looks fade, but a kind heart lasts forever. You will remember those memories that you shared with them for the rest of your life. We have all heard this saying at one point, but have we ever seen it in action?

I thought I would take a break from the controversial myTakes I've been putting out recently to share some photos of some beautiful dogs that have reached their apex in life. They are just heartwarming, and depict the loyalty of man's best friend.

Amanda Jones, born and raised in Massachusetts, has been photographing pooches for twenty years. With these photos, she had decided to put them together in a book she likes to call Dog Years: Faithful Friends, Then & Now. She was inspired to do this project after her dachshund, Lily, passed away from old age while the book was in progress.

Which was your favorite photo?

These dogs may have gotten old. Their fur may be turning grey, their teeth may have rotted and fell out, and they may have gone blind in an eye or two, but their owners still love them anyways, because they remember all of the sweet times that they have shared together. That's all that matters. Sometimes the memories that you keep are enough for you to still feel love for someone...or some dog.

Lovely myTake! This actually brought tears to my eyes. The animals are so cute, sweet and innocent, yet they have such low lifespans. I wish they lived longer than cruel, selfish, manipulative, evil humans.

And this is one of the reasons I refuse to get a pet, in spite of loving animals. I don't think I would be able to withstand the agony when they eventually die.

I love this! My favourite photo is No. 7, with the two labs who are clearly BFFs 😊 So cute!

I have heard of people giving their senior dogs up to shelters because they aren't "cute" anymore or not energetic like a younger dog. It makes me sad. A dog is a friend for life. A dog is a commitment, from the day you bring them home to the day they pass away. I love old dogs, with their cute grey faces or their grumpy "senior" behaviours, lol.

I love that quote. The dog in the photo is an Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler or Cow Dog). S/he looks just like my ACD Sam, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge exactly 5 years ago today at the ripe old age of 15. R. I. P. Sam, February 17th, 1996 - June 13th, 2011.

Aww thanks. Been thinking about him a lot lately. He was the first dog who was truly "mine", although he was also a great family pet and got on well with the two Dobermans we also had. I got Sam just before I turned 6, and he was my constant sidekick until I was 21.

We've started anew with 2 young dogs (well one is fairly young, lol) and I'm thinking about getting another ACD in the future.

this made me really sad. one of my dogs is really old (hes 14) and is going down hill pretty quickly so i dont think he has much longer left. he's collapsed a few times this last week and fell down the stairs earlier (not very far and i managed to catch him).

we've had to put a baby gate on the stairs now which is sad because he doesn't understand why he's not allowed to come up with us any more. i dont want to risk him hurting himself when were asleep or something.

its going to break my heart when he goes :(

I'm just getting to this great myTake. All of the photos are great. Maybe Lilly's photos touched me most deeply because I guess she belonged to the photographer you mentioned. But the character in the dogs' faces when they were older was really moving. Dogs are such amazing animals even though we sometimes take them for granted. They really do love us and just want to be loved back.

Puppies don't age they just get whiter thats all. When my dog was a puppy or when he was 16 he was still my puppie, acted like it too. Great now I feel bad. Adorable puppies though.

Yep he was a golden retriever they tend to live a good amount of time. And yeah He was absolutely a puppy, golden retrievers are known for their playfulness and he was definitley playful. Even when he had arthritis in his hips and had trouble sitting and standing he would still get up when my nieces and nephews where around to run around and play with them.

My dogs about that old now! Can't tell you what bred she is, but she's small and white and scraggly, the kind of dog that usually has an over bite.
She still acts like a puppy, I reckon if we still had the glass back door she'd still be jumping and licking it everytime you came near!

@BaileyisDarcy Yep, thats why to me they are always puppies, no matter how old they get they still have that attitude the happiness and excitment of a puppy. Thats how my dog was until his last couple of months (golden retrievers get really bad arthritis so once he sat down it was really hard for him to get back up so he had to settle for just wagging his tale as fast as he could)

aww these made me think of my dog JJ who is 11 years old now. Sure she has a tried look in her eyes but once she gets hyper it's like she's a puppy again. ^^

Aww my heart is heavy for this kind of take because I also have an aging dog. He is 10 years old now and we've had him for almost half my life since I was 12. My favorite pictures were the first one; Fred, and Maddie and Ellie <3

A childhood friend of mine had two pugs when we were growing up. They lived well into their teens, and their black patches grew grayish white. They were cranky by then, but still lovable.
