If I Could Write A Letter To My Past Self

As we grow up and attain more maturity, we look back on where we were compared to where we are today. There are so many things I wish I could tell the younger version of myself before she grows up. Don’t wear those clothes. Don’t comb your hair like that. Don’t put on so much makeup. More importantly, I wish I could explain some details about life. So if I could write a letter to the younger version of myself, it would go something like this:

If I Could Write A Letter To My Past Self

“To My Past Self: I’m writing you this letter because I know you. I know your heart, I know you are stubborn and I know you are unbelievably hard-headed. You choose your own path and don’t let anyone decide your future for you. I know this because I was you at one point in time. At first you will find this letter hard to comprehend. You’ll look it over a few times and eventually understand that this letter is meant to help you, not to make you question your beliefs.”

“I know your thoughts and I know how you were built. I know deep down you are a romantic and you love with everything you have. You get that from our dad. Don’t ever let that change. Things will happen in life that will force you to build a wall around your heart. Tear it down. Let others in but stay cautious with who you trust. You are and always have been a trusting soul. There is nothing wrong with believing in the good in people. Just know that sometimes people will let you down. There will be boys who break your heart just because they can. Don’t let them break your spirit. You will find an amazing man who loves you more than life itself. Make sure you open yourself enough to let God place him in your life. I know this because I already found him.”

“There will be times when you believe you know everything there is to know about life. Let me be the first person to tell you: Sit Down, Shut Up and Listen. There will be plenty of times when you will have to do things without anyone’s help. There will be nights when you cry yourself to sleep from all the stress and pressures of life. Embrace those few genuine people that care enough about you to offer their advice and that do it without stipulations. Everyone needs help at some point in their life. Just remember to pay it forward. Give back to someone else without expecting anything in return. There is still good in this world. You might just have to look a little deeper.”

“The last thing I want to share with you is the incredible impact you will have on this world. We may not become the next Steve Jobs or Einstein, but you will touch so many people’s lives that you won’t even be able to count. I have come to realize sometimes the simplest of gestures can change a person’s life. Make sure to keep in touch with old friends. When someone invites you to dinner or to a party, make the extra effort to go. When you get married and start a family one day, be patient and understanding with both your husband and your children. Stay humble. Stay kind. Never let the coldness of the world harden your heart. And always remember that you matter.”
