What do people think about loners?

loner-(lone wolf) people that don't like hanging around other people for along time. A person that doesn't have friends but will talk to you for a while, but don't expect him or her to say in touch. Not a pack animal rather do his or her own thing. A person that doesn't need a other person. Doesn't hang in a group. Will join a sports team, but after practice or the game don't expect him or her to hang with the his or her team mates.

I am one. I have found it depends on what you're like, primarily physically.

I have heard:

-I am a woman, so it's impossible for me to be a loner.
-I am stuck-up/think I'm better than others.
-I am shy.
-I am "different."
-I am mysterious.

I think most of the above is more likely to be applied to women and/or good-looking loners.

I have noticed most guys who are not especially attractive get called:

-weird
-socially awkward
-future serial killers
-creepy
-you're a loner because people don't like you, not because you choose to be

It can be hard to tell when someone is actually a loner, so that has a lot to do with how people think of you. I don't feel like I've ever really met another loner, but I probably have.

To me, being a loner is a choice, not about being rejected by others. If you're rejected by others and you're alone because of that, then you're probably more like "lonely." As a female loner who is attractive to some people, I find I constantly have to prove that I am a loner and dislike people, and the reason for that is because people won't leave me alone. Most of the time I can't get people to leave me alone because they don't believe I seriously don't like people and want to be alone, and the thing that works best is being really mean to someone, unfortunately. Most loner guys don't have these issues; people leave them alone.

Generally speaking they would be thought of as socially inadequate in one way or another. It would be assumed that they have some kind of social anxiety or a basic lack of social skills. It is rarely thought of as a positive thing.

Well that's their problem, they won't know until they approach me and get to know me, and if they do they'd be surprised that I can interact with people and I would be friendly to them and maybe a good conversation or even friendship would spark. I just don't like approaching people.
